Anyones 2005 duramax burning any oil

I have a 2005 crew cab with the duramax. It is using a little oil and was wondering if anyone else had similar problems. The truck has 8,500 miles on it.

How much oil are you using?

I'm up to over 14.000 miles on mine. Towing hard and heavy I used about 1/4 quart in about 3000 miles out to the Rendezvous in Salt Lake. Not bad compared to my ole 6.5TD. Not towing I don't need to add between oil changes (2500-3000 miles). ;)

I am burning about two quarts in 3,000 miles. I pull very seldom and most miles are down the highway. I change the oil at 5k.

I've got 3500 miles on mine, and the oil has not gone down any at all that I can see.

It is also still quite clean, and not black like my old 93 6.5 td used to be after 500.

2 quarts in 3000 is definitely high oil consumption. Do you have any leaks at all?

(Oil usage} I have 05 LLY 93,500 miles Pulling campers to dealers from the Elkhart area. Loaded one way returning empty. I change oil at 10,000 miles The engine does not use any oil between changes.

My '05 always has a trailer behind it. ~17K miles, no oil use observed between checks and/or changes.

I can't see that the oil is leaking anywhere. I guess it may have to go to the shop. Thanks for all the inputs.

It will slow up. The guys that are towing with them from day one will have way less usage. Mine has 46K and towing to Colorado and back was 3600 never used a drop. But to SLC and back which was about the same miles not towing it used about 1/2 quart.

I'm not concerned at all about it. To me if it used a quart or 2 in 10K is nothing. It will also depend on how fast you run it. If I run fast it will use more than running slower.

I bet Greg is spot-on. I am pretty sure that my '05 has NEVER seen the red-zone, RPM wise. We use all that low end torque pulling and don't wind them up at all. Max 2200 going down the road, and peaks of maybe 2600 while starting out from a dead stop.

All big trucks that I ever drove would use oil if lugged, or if rpm's were run up high. If kept in the mid range they would use little oil.

"0" not a drop at 20,000 miles. Have gone through 8 gallons of windshield washer fluid though!

Tbrake find yourself a HEAVY trailer and burn a 1/2 of a tank of fuel with it pulling hard in the hills before you make up your mind to take it into the shop! I am on my 4th GM deisel truck , they dont break in as fast as gas motors! If there not worked from day 1 it always be a pig on fuel and oil! so Change your rear end fluid, get a 7K ~ 14K lbs trailer run it around in the hills for about 2~3 hours really hard. I am talking 70+ mph up hills WOT to maintain speeds. I will bet that your oil consumption is less then 1/2 QT in 3000 miles after that! :eek: my lly truck had its first trip into the mountains with the trailer (about 6000 lbs of snowmobiles, gear and trailer with grades around 5~8 % at highway speeds) when it was 6 days old... in 10,000 miles it only uses 1 QT of oil max!

I have 12k+ on this oil and MAY have added a quart in the first 10k. I did have a little drip start on my bypass filter and tightened it up so you never know. I do know that round trip to UT was 3,600 miles and it did not use, leak whatever more than a pint. This change also had the Pull Off round trip of towing on it also.

I broke mine in somewhat aggressively and changed the oil early and often. It will net 19+ mpg with relative ease, and pulls VERY well. If I could afford to keep it I would, but the LBZ is something I need to keep up top with...

HAVING DRIVEN BIG TRUCKS MOST OF MY LIFE, I SECOND WHAT GREG SAID. IF DIESEL ARE LUGGED AND/OR NOT RUN HARD THEY WILL USE SOME OIL. WHEN PUT TO TEST BY HARD PULLING, THEY USAULLY QUIT USING OIL. THAT SAID, MINE USES BETWEEN 1 AND 2 QUARTS EVERY 5000 MILES OR SO. I ONLY PULL LOADS ABOUT 20 TO 30% OF THE TIME AND JUST AS SURE AS I PULL A LOT IT OIL USAGE SLOWS DOWN.

Interesting.

Makes sense. The oil doesn't make it past the rings under higher cylinder pressures, when the engine is being 'worked' hard.

As for intentionally 'working' the engine to stop future oil consumption, that seems odd - unless it helps to free up the rings and create better piston seal.

Check the left side of your block just above the filter. I have seen and resealed a few oil coolers on low milage LLYs. it's usually hard to spot unless you know where to look such as if it was hitting the ground.

Also after rebuilding big diesels the first thing we'd do was put'em on the dyno, warm 'em up then pull them all the way down to their lug point and let it hold there for a while to seat the rings and break her in a little. It made a big difference in initial performance and oil usage.
