RPM Jump

Hello, I have a 1996 6.5TD with 141K on it. When I shift from park to drive or from drive to park the engine RPMS will sometimes jump up to about 1500 while in the process of shifting. I also noticed that while driving home from work last night that I had a short surge in RPMS while at highway speeds. When this happens none of the idiot lights come on. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

I had a truck last winter which would try to run away like yours. In neutral slowly brought the rpm's up to 1200 and it ran away to 4000. The only code was an engine over speed code.

After the injection pump was replaced the problem also went away and the truck is still good.

Pull the engine codes first.

Thanks for the info. I will try to get the codes this weekend. I cant wait to put in another pump.
