With the weather being really nice here in Georgia over the last few days I decided to put the install mission on hold for some more mundane housekeeping items. You have to love being able to wash a truck in January without freezing to death and in short sleeves no less. :D

With both trucks looking like a couple of mobile pig pens I broke out the bucket and got them washed up. Along the way I recorded some sound clips of the exhaust systems too. I am sure my neighbors thought I was smoking some crack running around with a laptop near the exhaust pipe. redface.gif

I have a LLY file of the KD 4/5 exhaust and of the LB7 with the banks. Each file has some sounds very close to the pipe to hear the idle level, some throttle goosing captured a few feet away and a 2000 RPM powerbrake. I was shooting for good quality on the recordings so the files are large for WAVs, you may want to right-click and save as to bring them down to your PC for playback.

What kind of exhaust on the LLY?

It is Kennedy's exhaust system.

I have the dyno plots up for the LB7 with this exhaust, and should have the LLY up shortly. Here's the dyno plot directory:

The LLY clip has a more pronounced Turbo sound than the LB7. Is that because of the newer type turbo or did you just spool up the LLY more than the LB7 Truck. I want to get my 2002 sounding like that with a lot of Turbo.

DarylB, What gave my old LB7 some great turbo whistle is an AFE stage II kit and KD 4-5" exhaust. That setup really moves some air :D :D . I sold it on ebay after I ordered my LLY.

The new turbo is more aggressive down low which means it is spinning much faster. The jury is still out on the big end capabilities, and the overall efficiency, but down low, it is programmed to be pretty tight which enhances low end response.

The LLY variable vane turbo has way more whistle than the LB7. You won't get an LB7 to have that jet like whistle sound.

Both trucks were revved up and recorded the same way.

I've heard bombed 7.3 Power Strokes with lots of turbo whistle. Is it just a matter of the turbo size? As far as I know (which I'll be the first to admit isn't very much) the 7.3 does not have a VVT like the 6.0 or LLY. I noticed more whistle when I put on the K&N, and assume I'll get a bit more when the Kennedy 4 into 5 goes on :D . Any thoughts on cutting open the muffler and removing anything that "muffles"? I took the muffler off the stock exhaust, and have had many compliments on the sound even though it looks like crap. I even had a county cop pull me over to ask me what I did to my truck because he wanted to make his sound like that! Talk about my lucky day!

Most of it is related to turbo sizing and shaft speed. Inside my muffler there really isn't a whole lot, just a few louvers that restrict very little, and help tame the tone so the turbo can shriek through...
