While driving down the highway at 70 mph, the engine will make a rattling sound, run fine a few seconds, make a rattling sound again, run fine a few seconds and then make the rattling sound again. The truck had black smoke and then white smoke coming out of the exhaust the last time it happened.

The truck currently has 5100 miles on it and this has happened three times. We have taken it to the dealer on the first time it happened and it is currently there after the third time it happened. They can't pull any codes and do not know what is causing it.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea what is causing the problem?

After eliminating a past due fuel filter or fuel restriction problem, you may need to evaluate the injectors.

A scan tool or a Predator programmer might be able to look at the fuel injector data when this happens to help isolate the problem further.

Mine is doing the EXACT same thing. It is in the shop as we speak, no codes, they are replacing the fuel pressure regulator. We'll see. 05 with 6K miles.
