Surging in reverse

I had an experience the other day I had just shifted into reverse and had just started to back up when my truck surged like I had stomped on the accelerator. Scared the crap out of me and almost caused the demise of a nissan in the parking space behind me befor I stomped on the brakes. anyone got a clue as to what would cause this, I sure would not like to make this a habit.
