I know that an 8.1 will hook up to a 4 speed auto, 4L85E. Would not a Duramax hook up as well? How much TQ will the 85 hold? Will it hold more than the Allison? What about the ratio's? Could it be done?

Would it be a monster or a flop? Would the higher gearing required "kill" the power?

---- I'm just a parts changer. I would not know where to start.

All ye Gearheads please edumercate` me. :D :D

Burner,
I don't know about the 85 but if it is anything like the 80 it wouldn't work.
The 4L80E that was in my 95 6.5 didn't like the little power that the 6.5 made. IMHO the DMAX would shred it in no time.

pilot,

I have a 2001 3/4 ton burb. It has an 8.1 liter motor hooked to a 85E trans. There are many people that would argue that it is an 4L80E, not a 4L85E. I think that this combination, 8.1 & 4L85E, is extreamly unique. However, the 8.1 has a "tremendous" ammount of torque. I don't think that there is 50 ft lbs of TQ difference between the MAX and the 8.1. That is what got me thinking about hooking up the two. Building an 85 would be cheeper than building a 1,000. For the price of a "stock" Alli 1,000 you could build one heck of a 4L85E trans. tongue.gif If the pulling, power, speed and durability is availible with the 85, it could be an option for the hungry. Just a thought....... :D
