Clutches, all good here. I'll have access to a Tech 2 on Sunday and get a freeze frame so I can see what is what.

Posting some results soon.

It doesn't take too many "zings" to glaze/burn the clutches...

JK,

First time it ever limped.

Guess I'll have to be careful ;) ;)

Predator + Juice just a little too much for the stock ALLI.

When you seen my clutches, you may change your opinion...

I have a couple of C1 "steels" that are blued and curled like Bellville washers. C2 steel that touches a flat surface on opposite sides and levitates 1/8" plus on the other.

I may run my truck hard, BUT I try to respect it's limitations. 90% of the time, I can back out of a slip before the Allison sees it and reacts. I never launch over 8psi, and don't hold the brake for long periods of time.

Stacking will hurt the transmission. Running race type boxes w/o trans sensing will also hurt it. It may not have any externally visible affect, but diminished torque holding capacity will result...

Mack'n,
We'll just start call'n ya "Limp Bisket" :D How many "zings" does it take to get to the center of an Allison? tongue.gif One, two ....three Augh heck...stack, stack and stack it! Let it ride! Yeeeee hawwwwwww

Those on the sidelines, bear in mind that even though the trans does not hit limp mode when stacking etc, does not mean it is not slipping/doing damage.

Funny thing in all of this is that the C3 (suspected weakest link) clutches seemed the least burnt to my semi-untrained eye...

So JK,

What's on you plate for Allison upgrades???Or are they done???

Any chance the masses will find out what the sorcerer has in his hat ;) tongue.gif .

So far I have 24K miles, easy on her the whole time, just was out playing with the boys, stacking, pushed the pedal to the medal and did not let up :D . DOH!!! limped her, stuck in third till shut down. All is good now, I hope, except for a little SES looking me down when I saddle up.

Time will clear it and the Tech 2 for sure on Sunday.

We shall see what she puts down for numbers.

In MOST cases, it will not set a code. If it does, it will likely be incorrect ratio error for 5th gear, and the code will reside in the Trans codes section. I have also hit 2nd gear incorreect ratio error.

I swung through Denver on the way back from MT and had ATS do the clutches. Still waiting on a valve that should ease my R and 5 apply.

I'll have a Suncoast trans and converter enroute soon as well. I doubt/hope I'll not have to use it, but I figure better to be safe than sorry. If I had had the Suncoast here prior to MT trip, I'd likely have installed it, but things worked out best in the end in that I had a chance to have Clint straighten mine out!

So Suncoast is the back-up or are you playing with the ATS parts.

I will need a tranny eventually, pay later I hope not but never know.

Keep us informed.

Do you have to crush the tablets or does it come in a liquid? tongue.gif Is that the expensive addative in the Transynd or why the color is darker? ;) :D

Used 4 1/2 gallons between the flush and fill with the deep pan and new external filter.

Total cost was $44.00/deep pan, $126.00 for 5 gals/transynd, $7.50 for spin on, and $20.00 for deep sump pickup.

Just about $200 for all

GMC ;) Just like the power boxes, I have to try it out and find out what works/doesn't. When BD releases a converter (I am quite sure they will) I suppose I'll have to try theirs as well...

Zing....Zing....Zing...Hello, Welcome to the first time zingers club. :D

Yep...got it to go limpy today, hot juice level 3, Predator 40HP. Caught me by surprise (at about 90mph), quick threw it in neutral, coasted for 10 seconds, then back in drive and all was good. No codes, no pulling over for resetting.

No one has talked about just doing a Stage 1 from ATS. What's the story? Should be perfect for a Hot Juicer (and maybe a little Predator stacking).
Ain't it worth it? $1500 or so plus install. Something has to be wrong with it.
JK - did you go right to stage 2..or mess a little with only the torque converter installed?
I'm seeing prices like $4200 for 500HP, that could be a bit out of my range. :(
I'd be real happy with 375HP, if it ALL makes it to the rear wheels. ;)

What's it like? How much for the whole shibang (parts and install)? What kinda power mods are you runnin'? Any limpy limpy? Is it smooooth or snappy? Inquiring minds........ ;) tongue.gif

I ran the stage 1 from last August until this spring when level 2 was released.

Level 2 saw what I felt was an actual decrease in the 5th gear holding ability which was just recently (Monday) resolved with clutches. I am still waiting on one pice to get it finalized and return some civility to the R and 5 apply.

Looks like Suncoast will be doing a 2yr warranty and unlimited HP.

Tough call. Until I had ATS replace my SMOKED clutches, I was ready to hang it up and replace the trans. Now time will tell, but things are looking up!

It's pretty basic stuff. I had a few muscle cars that destroyed (manual) clutches. It didn't matter what you put in there.

I'll bet the Allison will last quite a bit longer than the older car style trannies when the truck is kept stock and driven normally.

When you raise the torque substantially going into it though, you can be sure it's taking it's toll on the clutches.

You play, you pay.

Funny thing is, it is the C2 clutches that are taking the beating. The C2 is on in 4th and 5th gears. Can't wait to get back to the dyno!

Seriously though, the clutches degrade with time, and don't always show their deterioration. I'd be willing to bet that at a minimum, there are blue spots on the steels...

06-19-2003, 08:43
John it's probably because the turbo is spooled and the torque is at it's peak when you hit those gears.

I know when my truck hits 5th and the converter locks, you can really feel the power build, especially with the lp on.

I don't ever recall driving a vehicle that feels like it's launching when it's in high gear.

It has been my observation that I have much better chance of limping with EMPTY truck at WOT shifts. With a load on, it seems to do better. May have to do with re-application of fuel after the shift and/or MAF and boost levels...

Yeah, back to back on the same truck the 90HP Juice slapped the 100HP Predator for HP and B**** SLAPPED it for torque.

What I was confused about was "where" it was posted is all. Was just trying to make myself understand smile.gif

I've seen, on average, less than 10 rwhp differences between the Predator 100 and the Juice 90, in favor of the Juice 90. As for torque I've been seeing 20 to 30 rwtq differences, in favor of the Juice 90. Both devices, however, on the trucks I'm referring to, made anywhere from 210 to 240 rwtq more than factory, and both devices making their peaks on both hp and tq at or very near the same rpms.

It just all depends on the vehicle, and the testing procedures, as well as the device used.

Kind Regards...

Well James,

Not here to knock the Predator, I do like it for what it is, however it showed us it is lacking some be very honest, but has other things going for it.

In my opinion it has worked well as a stacker on 40HP on my truck and to reflash for MPH and tire size.

Scanning is a bonus as well. ;)

In our experience Sunday on the dyno with 9 trucks and most combo's stacked and stand alone we verified Predators numbers straight up, same truck, back to back runs with same dyno driver.

It puts down lower numbers but makes some cool smoke when stacked, see my PICS :D

MAC, wanna chime in here tongue.gif  tongue.gif maybe we could get some hard numbers for ya from the dyno.

Mac & GMC, guys I completely understand what you're saying, no doubt!

I'm not knocking any product here either, as I think they all have something worthy to offer, and each do their own thing for what the customer is in need of.

Concerning the future for the Duramax Predator, there will always be testing and tuning to build new and improved files, and a better diagnostics section. Personally, I'd like to see up to 8 selectable parameters in the live diagnostics at once, instead of having to scroll through to get to the one you want. This would help with monitoring even further. I'd also like to see the tune "ratings" become more conservative, as well as the EGT's to be lowered some (namely on the higher powered tunes), and I feel this will happen in the coming months, from talking with Johan at DiabloSport.

Regards...
