Oil filter update.

Preparing for my first oil change. I checked most all the old threads to see what everyone was using for oil and filter. This is what I ended up with.

OIL: Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40
WalMart...$5.88 per gallon jug.

Filter: GM (Isuzu) #97214983
Chevy dealer....$9.50 ea.

The dealer was the ONLY place in a city of nearly 400,000 people that had the filter!!??!!??

No filters from O'Reilly, Autozone, Parts America, Napa, etc.

Oh well, time to go get dirty.

I had the same problem here in the Seattle-Tacoma area in finding a oil filter. All the auto parts stores had nothing in stock. Finally I went back to Wal Mart (stock just came in) and bought some Fram PH9100 oil filters @ $2.54 ea. The Pennzoil was $15.88 for 2.5 gallon jugs as well. I had one hell of a time in removing the factory oil filter. I broke 2 filter wrenches and totally crushed the filter before finally removing it with a huge pair of channel locks. Good Luck

TO-D-MAX, I received information from Dr. Lee about the Delvac 1300. I will attach it below;

"Delvac 1300 is a very good mineral based diesel oil, but it is intended for genuine heavy duty diesels, and has too much sulfated ash for best performance in our engines. The proper Mobil mineral oil for 6.2, 6.5 and 6.6L GM diesels is Delvac 1200, which has a balanced detergent and zinc dithiophosphate level to keep our engines clean, but not leave deposits on the rings and the pistons."

I wanted to use the 1200 but was unable to locate it anywhere. I even called a Mobil distributor, but they told me to call a Chevron distributor...kinda scarey isn't it?


markf, first let me welcome you to the site! It is a great place to learn about these wonderful vehicles we drive. On a second note, do a search on oil filters. IIRC, Fram is having problems with their filters and are not recommended. Stick with the factory filter from GM until a more reputable manufacturer is available.

Don't they have AC-Delco in your areas, for you guys that are having a hard time finding filters?

Grab the yellow pages.

AC-Delco is the filter that the dealers here are selling, so I went straight to the source and am saving 4-5 bucks a filter.

AC-Delco pf2232 (I think...might have the numbers sdrawkcab)

Correct...PF2232 is what is recommended in the book.
TOO NEW to stock is the word I got.

Book also recommends the Delvac 1300. Figure I am ok there also.

Well whoever told you they are too new to stock is wrong...

Try an AC-Delco store, and if they are the ones that told you that then call the warehouse distributor here at 1-800-478-2606.

Try the Shell Rotella 15w-40, I'm having great luck with this oil. It is availiable at any Wal Mart.

Delvac 1300 is fine to use in the Dmax, so don't worry. IIRC, Delvac 1200 is being discontinued.

Don't forget about the Amsoil oil filters being available now too. Made FOR the Duramax, it might fit something else but it was made for the Duramax.

I'm glad to hear that the 1300 is O.K. Ihave been using it for a long time and it is cheaper that Rotella at the local wally worlds by me. Cheaper than Delo also.

Thanks Mdrag for the update. What I posted was a reply from Dr. Lee back in October of 2001. I was on a goose chase trying to find a supplier that handled the 1200. I asked Dr. Lee since I am unable to locate 1200, is the 1300 ok to use? His reply was use either delo or rotella. Based on Dr. Lee's latest input, sounds like Mobil has changed the chemistry of the 1300 so it is now safe to use.

The AC-Delco website specifies the PF2232 filter. Within 100 miles of my home the only retail outlets the website lists AutoZone stores. I called the closest one and their computer lists the filter as PF2232S and it is not available to them yet.

Guess I'll keep going to the GM Parts Counter for now.

BTW - Alot of the Wal-Marts are now carrying the Rotella Synthetic oil

Just ordered oil and diff lube from AmsOil and they told me they don't have a filter for the dmax yet. Do you have a part#?

Boy I don't know who you talked to but we have had the oil filter sinse 4-1-02. Part number is SDF-52 Air Filter is TS-123.

Several of the local Autozone stores here in northern Utah carry the STP filter for the DMAX. They are made by Champion Labs. The # is S9100 and they were $4.95. Later! Lone Eagle :cool:

Wix has their Oil Filter out, it is 57202. They also have fuel and Air filters for D/MAX. Don't know these part numbers.

We were discussing this about a year ago, and all came to the conclusion they have a contest to see who can torque those babies down the best... :D

My humble theory (proven this weekend I believe)... The oil pressure has something to do with this. I was changing the oil out at ~7K everytime, but this last time I went ~12K. Of course, this was after an analysis at 8K which was fine. But, after the extended drain interval, it was MUCH harder to take off. It took about 5 minutes to get it off this time! And, when I install an oil filter, all I do is lube the gasket with oil, and tighten it by hand. So, maybe the heat itself is "setting" the gasket.
