View Full Version : They changed the crankcase!
I haven't seen any posts about this so excuse me if I am stating the obvious. The aluminum portion of the crankcase/oil pan no longer has the huge rise through the middle which left a reservior of unchangeable oil in the front. My 2001 had this pan and it never took more than 9.1 quarts to refill it after an oil change.
Not only does my new truck (built 4/16/02) not have the built in dam it also doesn't have the black mastic sound deadening material plastered all over the front of the crankcase. Interesting! They eliminated the tunnel because they just now realized that all of the oil couldn't be drained out? I doubt that it's that simple! Maybe there is some kind of undisclosed problem with not being able to change the last quart! Could this be an attempt to cover up the tick by using a differently shaped crankcase? BTW the new one does tick but it is very faint and it comes from the drivers side now.
Find an old magazine with the add that shows the helicopter hauling a Dmax over a city. My old crankcase looked like that. The new one is flush all the way to the stamped oil pan.
Maybe I better read the owners manual on this one and make sure it still takes 10qts.
Wally, where are you getting the build date? I looked all over and can't locate it on mine. After driving it home 968 miles I did find a check list in the eng compartment tucked under the alternator ~ but no dates. ~ odoh
odoh ,
Look on your door by Lock mechanism for a sticker, label, what ever ... Should be there .?
MAC :D
That was the first place I chkd ~ says 04/02 which I took for Apr 2002. Really, not a specific date. ~ odoh
I got my build date from two places. The truck was an order so the dealer knew what day it was built. I also had Pontiac (Howard) watching for it and he also confirmed the 4/16 build date.
TPW 4/15
completed 4/16
shipped 4/19
arrived at dealer 4/30

My Duramax was built in November of 2000 and always took ten quarts to fill the dipstick to the full mark before adding the Amsoil dual remote bypass

Boy, you sure got to be fast around here. I noticed the two frame stickers after I drove it home from the dealership. I figured that it had to be the starting date since you would need a frame to start building. Also noticed one of them was upside down. This must be so they can read it when the frame is upside down to install the suspension parts.
SHOPMAN426,
Mike. ;) ;) ;)
Mark ~ Great, it was there. Built on 04/15 (monday). Thanks ~ odoh

The build dates on the frame , and build dates on
the doors are not the build dates for the engine.
I'm sure some date is stamped somewhere - I know the 396s I used to race were. Interesting that they have changed oil pan.
Man, you guys are killin me. I post about significant changes to the engine, hoping someone could tell me why, and it turns into a discussion about when the trucks were built.
FYI the date on the frame has NOTHING to do with the production date of the truck! The date on my frame is 03-07-02. This is only the production date for the frame. I know for a fact the truck was built on the 16th of April. I have no way of knowing when the engine was produced. There is probably a sticker somewhere on the engine that gives this info but ya can't see it for the wire and hoses.
Now that I've ranted does anybody have any idea why the crankcase was changed?

Interesting you mention that, because I remember reading someone recently had a build date of 02/02/02, and I think reading mine had that same date on the sticker.
Hey, someone out there has a brother of my trucks' ! :D

Wally:
Engine build dates (month/year) can be found on the valve cover. There is an Isuzu plate stamped on the valve cover (driver's side) that lists the month and year of manufacture, engine family, SAE rated horsepower, torque, and the peak RPMs for both.
FYI: The RPM for peak horsepower changed for the 2002 models. The peak horsepower is now 300 @ 3000 RPM.

Man, I don't see how you knew that tin emblem was there, unless you where the one incharge of that decision. My tag said 08/01 which would be one day before the frame was built. I was wondering how I was to get that small amount of oil out of the pan. I don't have a jack to go that high. Mabey that is all the change is for, to drain all the oil.

SHOPMAN426:
No, I was not involved in the decision to place the information there. smile.gif
In fact, a friend pointed it out to me. It was much easier to find on the display engines (Duramax Powertour).

Apparently the crankacse change has nothing to do with quieting down the ticking! Made a hard run across the top of the State this weekend headed for Red River. Everytime we pulled in from highway speeds the ticking was extra loud. Shut the truck off and let it cool for a few minutes and it will re-start with out the tick. Never had a real ticker before, this is kind of annoying!
I also changed the oil Friday and it took 9.7 qts to bring this one up to the full mark. Maybe that is the only reason for the change, to allow a full oil change.

Diesel Brad,
Interesting that they are now saying 300 HP at 3000 rpm. If you work it out, that equals 525 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. Yet GM claims 520 lb-ft at 1800 rpm. Either the engineers or the numbers are fooling us.
So when are we all going to get new crankcases, Im tired of hanging my truck from the rafters by the front bumper to get all the old oil out. Stu
