Opinions please on oil filter alternatives. A local parts house sells Wix filters and was wondering how they stack up.
Opinions about other filters would probably be of use to all of us.

Denny, check out this link for some good info.
oil filter comparison (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/)

I think Wix, Baldwin, and AC Delco are good choices for our trucks, stay away from Fram. See the study for more info.. lots of good stuff in there

This week I purchased an oil analysis kit from Cummins. While there I asked if by chance they make an oil filter for the Duramax and they do. It is a Fleetguard which is owned by Cummins. I have only run it for a couple of days so I can not say one way or another how it is going to work out. But my feelings on it is that if Cummins runs it then it should be a good filter for the Duramax also. If you are interested, the part number is LF 16102 and cost less than $7. They also carry an air filter, AF 25848 for less than $13. Their fuel filter looks like it is a Racor but over priced at $49. smile.gif
I think I saw in the Fleetguard literature that it filter down to 5 microns.

And Toddster, where did you find these micron ratings for these filters??

If I'm not mistaken I think Bill Plock also posted similar findings on the micron ratings from research he also done a while back. However Amsoil never replied. Below is possibly the reason.
See the cut open filter pics in my sig below for a side by side view of the Baldwin B1441 and the Amsoil. They are exactly the same. It would appear to me that Baldwin manufactures the Amsoil filters that fit our trucks. While they don't claim Baldwin manufactures their filters, they do claim superior filtration.

Thanks for the replies folks. This is a good info thread. I'm about to do the second oil change and was wondering if there were better filters out there. I have in the past always used OEM filters as I thought that they were the best for the engine. I am changing my mind.
Toddster, how bout those numbers?

George George,
Last fall when after I bought my 03 I sent emails to AC Delco, Baldwin, Wix and AMSOIL requesting filter % efficiency ratings in microns for their DMAX OIL filters. All responded except AMSOIL. (originally posted here. (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=004463#000008))

Here are the numbers I was quoted.
AC DELCO PF2232: 25 microns nominal, 40 microns absolute (Beta numbers not stated)
WIX 57202 13 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 37 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
Baldwin B1441: 8 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 23 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
AMSOIL SDF-52: No response - May be identical to B1441 since Baldwin is OEM for AMSOIL

Also, I suspect the AC filter might be better than this. The person I was corresponding with didn’t seem too knowledgeable (takes one to know one). At first they said they didn’t quote specs, but I shamed them into it by telling them that WIX and Baldwin had quoted specs (this didn’t work with AMSOIL however). smile.gif

Thanks, I'll give him a call. I'm sure he'll be thrilled to be getting all the calls for the Predator reprogramming, as well...

Bill,
Thanks for sharing; I am simply amazed you were able to get actual numbers out of those folks! I gave up years ago in trying to get those very numbers. Thank you so much..
Of course the problem is there is no such engineering/filter rating term as Nominal, nor absolute.. However, a close to 'absolute' could be considered in the beta 2000 range..

I cut open an Amsoil bypass today. That is interesting. I would love to know what it's numbers are. Got my filter cutter yesterday and cut open the oil filter, the oil bypass filter, the tranny spin on and OEM fuel filter today. Will post pictures if I can get to it tomorrow. The most difficult was the tranny by far.
