Engine temp while towing

What kind of temp are you guys seeing while towing? And what is the max temp you have seen?

About 210 indicated on the gauge. GCVW of 13,500. The Juice was on level #4, 75 MPH up an approximate 6% grade, in fifth gear. That's the hottest coolant temp I've seen.

Ambient air temp was about 95-96 degrees.

I've seen 240 and climbing before. Had to back off the throttle at that point.

Stock truck pulling heavy load with a ton of wind resistance. Could not go over 65 mph orthe temp started going up again.

Normally see 200-210 loaded.

This relates to the tranny temp also. Towing up 8% grade without tow/haul on I've seen 210 on engine and 230 on tranny. Then same run with tow/haul, 200 and 200. Use tow/haul is the lesson. Brings us back to the "scope" that was being perfected so we can can avoid "licking the Banks." What happed to the Scope Dude?

During heavy climbing with 26k CGVW running 3rd and 4th gear the engine temp went to 240 and the trans temp to 230. This was in tow/haul mode. Engine fan was on all the time. Normal running pulling down the road with the same load it stays at 200/210 on the engine and 190/210 on the trans.

Long up mountain pull at 3000 rpm and 65 in 3rd saw eng at 230 and trans at 210. Backed speed speed to 55 and 2500 rpm and dropped immediately back to 200 trans and 200 eng.

I have noticed that the trans gage and the engine temp are usually within 10 deg or less of each other most of the time.

If you realy want to know the tempture in your motor install an oil tempture gage.The oil tempture will change 30 degeres with out the water tempture moving any.Socaldmax was the first one to install the gage and I think he has seen the same thing. If you tow a lot of weight I think this gage is a must. Cranky

Pulling 9000 lbs in very hilly terrain for 200+ miles--engine 200 degrees, trany 215 degrees.

My last 4800 mile trip never saw tranny temp over 190 towing 10,000# enclosed car trailer. But around town, towing my 16' open utility, I've seen it around 205-210 without tow/haul on. So now when I do my city hauling I'm always in tow/haul mode, especially when the outside temps are over 90 degrees and stuck in traffic.

Running 65mph with a quartering head wind, thru the Texas hill country pulling my 10,500# 5er, engine 195, trans.190. Kicked it up to 70, couldn`t tell any difference. That trans air deflector really works.
