Do you know why the new filter? Is it addressing some shortcoming of the older filters? change in micron rating, filter material, etc.

Thanks for the information.

Sorry boys, I've told you all I know.

"The new design 6.6L Duramax fuel filter, referenced in TSB 04-06-04-070, may not be available in service parts until December, 2004 or later. However, it may show up on production engines before this time. Also, shortages of the current design LLY filter may occur."

"Advise dealers to continue using the current design filters (LB7 or LLY). Production of the existing design LLY filter element (GM P/N 97363539) is being phased out. If you face any difficulty in obtaining a replacement LLY filter, the current design LB7 filter (GM P/N 89016324) can be substituted. The only difference between these filters is that the overall length is slightly shorter on the LB7 filter. This will not affect the recommended change interval of 15,000 miles."

here is some info that is hard to read, but looks techy...

Eric,

Thanks for the info!! http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif Very Interesting!! The drawing in the link you posted shows two different layers of filter media - an outer primary pleat block and an inner secondary pleat block. Just a guess but maybe a 10-micron followed by a 1-2 micron??? It also says the interior of the filter will be painted white (prevents rusty filters?)... The spec blocks on the drawing have TBDs. It would be even more interesting to see the actual specs on the final drawing. The date on this preliminary drawing is April 04 so one would guess they are gearing up for production…

Hmmm… sounds like they are improving the filter’s performance….

Dmaxallitech,

While the engineering drawing you posted seems techy, it speaks a thousand words. Excellent information. I am still trying to read it, but it looks like Isuzu issued an Engineering Change Order to improve the efficiency of the filter (heck, George M. had this figured out over 2 years ago!!). It also looks like Isuzu owns the filter specification (not GM).

There had been some rumors floating around that the new filter would improve filter efficiency. I could not for the life of me figure out how they could do that without increasing the filter dimensions. Goes to show you, I am not a filter engineer.

A dual pleat filter. Thats a good solution for trying to stick with a single filter system (and to keep things simple for the consumer). It would have been interesting to participate in this trade study that went on and how they reached this solution (different approachs and how they relate to cost, schedule, technical). From a pure technical point of view, the optimal solution (from my view point) would have been two distinct filter systems. Just like what many have done on these forums. Its good to know that the work we did here was eventually the direction that Isuzu/GM went (increase of overall fuel system filtering efficiency). A big "thank you" to George M and John K for pushing the envelope forward on this whole fuel filtration issue.

Bill,

I found where the drawing calls out a painted white exterior. Could not find a white interior. But it is hard to read the drawing. The most recent filters that I bought from Lubespecialist looked to have a different treatment on the interior metal. No rust anywhere to be seen.
