We recently purchased 2002 HD2500 crew cabs with the Duramax engines. What experience have others had with various oils in extremely cold weather (like in Minnesota)? Normal or Syn. What Brands?

Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel or the Amsoil 15W-40 Diesel and Marine.

Synthetic all the way. Better starting, AND better protection in extreme heat like turbo bearings!

I must absolutely agree. Synthetic is a must have.

How many miles are you running between changes with the Syn Oil? We normally put on 3-4,000 per month.

Drain intervals is always a hot question. I have Duramax customers with over 50K on the oil and they are doing oil analysis every 10K. A couple of these guys are towing every day too.

You will have to sample your oil to tell. Conventional spectro analysis can be a bit misleading. I'd run 4k and have AV Lube do a ferrography. I kinda doubt it will suggest continuing. I ran 10k on one dump, but now will not go past 4k...
