View Full Version : 2006 info; 360Hp
I just read about 2006 models from Chevy. Duramax 360Hp (post is from dealer who got chance to test these models):
1) 1/2T Silverado will come with an available "VortecMax" package, that includes a 6.0 V8 with 345HP and 380 ft lbs of torque. As a comparison, the "Hemi" put out 345/375, and the Triton 5.4 at 300/365. Tow ratings on 1/2 tons have been upper to 10400 for 2WD's, 10100 for 4X4's. Sounds like GM is getting tired of hearing "it's got a hemi." The 1/2T's will also have the hood styling from the HD series ("power dome"), but no news on the new GMT800 waiting in the wings.
2. The Duramax has been updgraded to 360HP, 650 ft/lbs of torque. Dodge's Cummins currently puts out 305/555, Ford's PSD is at 325/570. The Duramax will have an Allison 6-speed transmission, and is approved for B20 biodiesel fuel usage. Lets assume Ford and Dodge aren't going to be standing still here.
3. GM also announced that Silverado sticker prices would be lower in '06 by about $2000-$3000, depending on model. Looks like they're pricing in the rebate on a permanent basis.
Sounds interesting. Also, I believe the Dodge is currently at 325HP and about 610 ft/lbs of torque (for 2004-2005). I believe the 305/555 numbers were back in 2003.

If the power is going up that much on the diesel, is the allison's holding capability being increased somehow? If not wouldn't any kind of power increase a person puts on (programmer, intake, propane) put you over the limit even easier?

The GMT800 is the truck that's currently out.
The 345hp 6.0L is probably the Silverado SS engine (or the same 6.0L with the SS PCM flash).
2006 models are going to "returnless" fuel systems - no fuel return lines to the tank to reduce evaporative emissions.
The returnless engines are already here.

Just wait until the new 09's come out with 450=HP and an 8speed tranny. Remember it is how you get the power to the ground in every test I have seen the 03-04 Fords with the 325/560 rating was faster loaded and unloaded than anything current. Personally I think those numbers are plenty especially if they would get better MPG's. :D
just got our 06' today and sorry guys,,,only 310hp and 605 ft lbs torque. It did get the 6 speed allison though.

haven't checked the rpms yet but the manual shift feature is pretty slick.
Oh it's not mine, can't afford one. My 02' 6.0l truck is still runnin' fine. these 06's are the dealerships trucks. I'm not sure if I like the new shifter handle or mirrors yet. Under the hood, the filter looks different as does the charge pipe design and routing into the intake. I flogged the first one we got today for most of the afternoon and it ran great. It may just be me but it also sounded even quiter.

on the shift indicator display it reads D, M, 1. Pull it down into M and you can manually select your shifts w/ a rocker switch on the shifter handle.

Am I missing something here? Are there going to be more than one horse power level available?

" I thought the lowest elapsed time meant it got there the quickest.
:D
no more NSBU switch on the tranny anymore as well. the more I drive it and like at it , the more I notice.
no more NSBU switch on the tranny anymore as well Um, this might be a dumb question, but then how do the computers know the trans isn't in gear, you know, in park or neutral, in order to start it?
I don't really know a bunch about transmissions, but how would it know?
Have a good one!!

:D We are. The completely stock Duramax had a better top speed than the Ford, even though the Ford was not stock. It has a split exhaust (it sounded like a jet engine, I was there) and had an AFE intake kit. Says so in the article.
My point was this: stock for stock, it's a matter of road conditions, driver and time of day as to which will win in a real world contest like the Pull-Off. The Fords, and especially the Dodges, have nothing on the Chevrolet...all hyped claims aside. Quote: "Lynn's truck achieved the highest speed among all those running at stock power levels."
Funny too. The older Ford came with a specific goal of beating the Chevy's and was supposedly modded specifically for the hill. Wasn't even close...

His truck might have had highest speed but it got there three seconds later I would take two mph slower over three seconds anyday. I seriously doubt the exhaust and intake made up for the headwind. I have a modded exhaust on my truck and the only difference I could tell was in lower egt's. I am not trying to make a brand war I think all trucks have their good points and bad points. :D

The NSBU could be put anywhere - as long as it is indexed correctly to gear position. Since the NSBU has had a few problems with moisture and other environmental issues, moving it inside the truck would make sense (probably somewhere on the steering column).

All I said was it was no longer on the tranny! Don't know where it is but it's no longer exposed. I just hope they don't have problems w/ these switches, hell we might end up pulling dashes to change'em out.

GM has mounted them on the steering column for years in other applications. I don't see how this would be an issue now.

From what I hear, the power levels for current '06 models will be basically unchanged but there will be a significant increase sometime during the '06 model year. They are being very tight lipped about exactly how much and when but it is coming!

Why can't they just do it at the beginning of the year? Maybe its just a pet peeve, but it annoys me to change stuff mid-year model.

My guess is that it helps them ensure they dont have a bunch of unsold 2005 trucks sitting on the lot...
Or a bunch of Duramax engines...

Or perhaps they just want to wait until the competition comes out with their new numbers so they can be sure to beat them.
Also by making changes mid-year, it may help them to meet tougher emissions levels? By introducing the '07 emissions package in mid '06, they might get a better adverage for the year.

An internal mode switch (on the valve body) replaces the NSBU. This won't be exposed to the elements and hopefully will be virtually troublefree.

sweet! they've been doing it that way for a while now w/ their bigger trannys and I've yet to see a problem w/ one.

Great! IS there any plan to change Allison (for higher power)?

Took a drive today, and looked at a number of '06 Duramax powered trucks. Will use the photography in an upcoming article on the new models.
I learned that the new trucks with the 360 hp Duramax won't begin production till approximately September 15th. The trucks currently on dealer lots have most of the 2006 engine do-dads, like intake air grid heater, modified air box, etc., but still run with 2005 power.
The six-speed Allison with manual control is pretty slick! smile.gif
