Anyone know of a good source for the Trans filters? The dealers around here can't seem to find the screw on trans filter,so they sold me part#29537965 which appears to be a filter that would be up in the pan.How often does this filter need changed? I have 17,000 miles now and want to flush it asap because I just saw that you should change filter at 500 miles but they didn;t include that in the owners manual hope theres not to much crap up in there. Thanks Todd.
DMAX TODD,
Try the ALLISON SERVICE LOCATOR (http://www.vicinity.com/allisontrans/geoprx.hm?cty=US&cont=1&AD4=US&DBR=100&FC=&AD2=&CITY=&STATE=&ZIP=19320&x=40&y=20) for the Allison dealer nearest you. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Access the Sales/Service Locator and try to find the closest Allison Distributor/Branch or a Dealer that has a 1000/2000 Series Maintenance or Overhaul designation. They should have your spin-on filter (P/N 29539579). They may also have the previous design filters, 29531007 or 29537268. The difference between these three is as follows:
29531007 has no "flats" at the bottom of the filter.
29537268 has the "flats" and an internal bypass valve.
29539579 (current P/N) has an improved seal to improve performance in extreme cold climates. (Don't really think that's a problem in PA!!! http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif)
Try to get either the 29537268 or the 29539579 filters. The internal filter they sold you only needs replaced at overhaul............and then only if it is clogged severely! Give it back to them and tell 'em you want your money back!!!
DMAXTODD,
BTW, that was a typo in one of the posts - it should read 5000 miles (five-thousand) as the mileage to replace the spin on filter. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
We all know who is responsible for making this mistake... http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

And for you smartey-pants types, it's really FIVE miles if you have larger than standard tires on your trucks! http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
On the filter change . Is it necessary to drain fluid? Can you just change filter? How much fluid should you expect to lose?Or is it best to do it all.

Just the trans filter at 5000 miles. Maybe a full cup. There is a ring magnet sitting on top of the filter. Be sure to remove, clean and install on the new one.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems the Allison dealers around here are not quite up to speed with the 1000 series they either did not have it in stock or said call GM. I finally convinced the dealer that there is a spin on filter by making him look under my truck, he then ordered me one that should be in monday. Still love this truck!! more and more of these around here in pa.

I just bought a filter from the Allison shop here in Anchorage...$8 and change ( for you Alaska guys information ). Also, where is everyone coming up with this 5 thousand mile number? I just read my owners manual and both the truck manual and the Duramax supplement state 50 thousand light use or 25 thousand heavy use...
I plan on changing the filter this week along with the engine oil as I am going to be towing this next weekend...I think I will wait on the trans fluid though...don't think it needs it yet as the 6 thousand miles I have on the truck have been easy miles mostly.
AlaskaDmax,
Here are two links to posts by SteveO and BigAl explaining the 5000 mile Allison spin on filter change:
