This is my first post on this form. I just bought a new Duramax and I want to change my oil. I have always had ford power strokes. I used Shell Rotella in them and was wondering what was the prefered oil for the Duramax? By the way I am very impressed on the pulling power that this truck has. Thanks.

That's one heck of a can of worms you just opened! Put the lid back on.

Use the grade/rating specified in your owner's manual, which is 15/40 CH-4 or CI-4. Anything other than that depends on climate (viscocity), and the opinions everyone here. Results vary as much as the jelly bean count in the jar at the drug store.

For those of us that stay with Dino oil the Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo 400 are the two main oils that are used. If you are brave enought to try the extended oil drain intervals, then the synthetics are an option.

The worst API certified oil you can find today is probably better than the best available 10 years ago, and people were getting a lot of miles out of their engines back then. Buy what you feel like paying for, like MP said as long as it is the right grade and you keep it clean, that Duramax will run a long time. Enjoy.

I found out during my last oil change that Mobil Delvac comes in both Dino and Synthetic flavors! Beware that you get what you want when you tell the service guy. Mine asked me just to double check.
