View Full Version : Correct Vacuum Pump Gauge Reading?

In the process of troubleshooting my heater controls, I happened to check the vacuum pump to make sure it was working.

When I hooked up the gauge to the pump and started the engine, I noticed that the needle rapidly bounced from about 16 to about 22, never settling down.

Is this normal, or should the reading be steady at 18 or so?

TIA,

Does you gage/hose have a check valve in it. If so, you need to disable the check to show falling vacuum. Some have a check valve to show high/low values if you need to monitor it and are not able to keep eyes on it.

Other than that, 16-22" is within the operating range, 16 being minimum. A new ,good pump should show about 21".
