I have an old balancer and need a new one. Should I fork up the dough for one from the dealer ship, get a cheaper one at carquest(AC Delco), or go cheap from autozone? I know it is important for a 6.2 but don't want to get ripped off. The guy at the dealer ship said I should also get the main pulley but that is 300 dollars. Do I have to get that and how do I know if it is going bad?
Thanks for the advice,
Kyle

my understanding is that the main pulley doesn't apply to the 83. It was a later model that had the rubber shock mounting in it. Of course if you wanted the additional shock mounting you could, but when I put my new engine in, I used the old pulley. I personally would stick with AC/Delco, whether from a dealer or otherwise. My price from the dealer wasn't a whole lot higher than the off brand at AZ. Also check several dealers if you go that route. I replaced a 350 in my old truck several years ago with a crate engine and one dealer was $2200 and one 20 miles away was $1400 so it pays to shop around.

I agree about sticking with the GM product. You might want to do some online searches. Jegs might have the item. Also consider given Avent (Advent?) a call in Georgia.
They are some great people, fully support TDP, and have helped me with parts.

The only catch to getting one from Avant salvage is that I would want a new one. I'm pretty sure they only deal in used and rebuilt parts. They may handle some new parts, but I'm not sure.

Ok, thanks. I will get the carquest one and keep my old pulley. Thanks for the advice.
I got a new GM balancer for under $100.
I used www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com)

Ditto on Northern Wrangler's advice. I've bought a couple of balancers from these guys with great savings over the local dealer! My '83 does not have the balancer pulley but my '86 does. Both have 240k miles on the original engine. Stick with the GM balancers.
