My brother has a 1985 4 dually 4 door with an automatic trans. 6.2 non turbo diesel. It has started leaking oil big time out the front and rear seals.
Here is the question, can the pan be removed without lifting the engine?
Also, any other helpful info on replacing the front and rear seals?
I have replaced the rear seals in old small block chevy's before (2 piece)but have no clue about what I will find in this 6.2 diesel.

It will have an old rope seal in it but you will replace it with a new rubber one that you can get from an auto parts store for 15-20 bucks. The front seal can be replaced with the oil pan on, you just need to take off the balancer. On my four wheel drive blazer, I only need to lift the front of the frame up so the oil pan can clear the axle and it will come of with the engine in place. I also think that on 2 wheel drive trucks the engine has to be lifted. I am not sure about yours though. Depending on how many miles are on the truck it might be a good idea to change the oil pump. You might also want to check for cracks around the main bearings while you're down there.

Oh yeah it is a two piece. Be careful not to cut it when sliding the top half in and use silicone where the two ends meet and where the bearing cap seals with the block. It should come with instructions to tell you exactly how. I think I got mine from autozone.

They come with an installation tool... a little plastic strip to guide the upper seal into place without damaging it from scraping against the sharp edges on the block.

FelPro recomends NO sealant be used on the ends of the seal, and the use of anearobic sealant on the area where the main cap seals to the block.

I've done quite a few this way with NO leaks, have another to do tomorrow or Friday, anybody wanna help???

So, have we decided if for sure or not the pan can be removed from a 85 dually 2 wheel drive 6.2 without lifting the engine?

2wd ... my guess is no ... you probably have to lift the engine a bit ... there is only one way to tell, just be ready to undo the motor mount bolts and lift it a little bit.

You have to lift the engine up to remove the pan on a 2WD, been there done that.

Not that bad though, just remove the starter. Then secure your engine via a hydraulic engine hoist using the factory lifting eyes. Then remove the two large engine mount bolts that connect the mount to the cups attached to the block. Then lift the engine up about 2". Then remove the pan. It's probably a good idea to get the pan loose before you lift it, but not necessary.

I had the pan off of my 82 GMC this past week. I did not have to raise the engine.

Hello All,

signgrafix: I have an 87 2500 heavy duty. I did not have to raise the engine. You may have to on a 1500 or 2500 light duty?
