Well I finally got around to uploading pics of my blown 6.2l, photo quality isn't that great because I was using a disposable camera. It actually ran for some time while this was happening!

Shoot! I was looking for the 6-71 Huffer set up! Those pictures don't give quite the same feeling.

Did I miss a post?

When did this happen and what were you doing at the time?

Also sorry about the engine.

This happened around the beginning of November, I had a load of masonry that must have weighed in at around 3000lb in the bed and was hauling it to the landfill. The engine had been making noise for a week or 2 and I'd already decided to run it till it died, which is exactly what I did :D . I pulled out of a parking lot onto an uphill grade, and the guy in front of me was going too slow for 3rd gear, so I kept it near the pin in 2nd till I was on level ground and could shift and a new noise started LOL. I kept going toward the landfill and everything came apart just outside the gate. It was still running while I popped the hood to check for holes in the block or something like that, but shut down after about a minute - just about the time I noticed the black waterfall running out the rear of the engine.

Now I'm 6.5l-powered with a '99 6.5TD, DB2 pump turned up to 275ish hp, but with most accessories off a '94 so there's no high-flow cooling :( ...yet! That'll come before too long, along with a 3.5" exhaust and 3.73:1 FF 14-bolt.

Nice shrapnel!

My question here is what happened first, what was the noise, just out of curiousity?

I didn't really do any analysis to find out why the valve dropped, but I'm assuming either I didn't properly tighten one of the rocker shaft bolts or one of the rockers or retainers was bad. I suppose it could have been a weak valve spring too. I'd replaced both heads back in September and it hadn't been making noise all that time (it started maybe around the end of October) but once it started it only lasted about a week before grenading.

Which type rockers did the engine have? I'm guessing the stamped steel type, because of the retainers.

I'm just nosy because when one of these engines drops a valve, it's always a very catistrophic failure it seems, just want to see if there is a chance that the valve just got weak and broke at the stem.

But, since you had a noise (warning sign) it probably wan't a valve that just suddenly broke at the stem.

The guy I bought it from said he had the pump calibrated to deliver about 275hp. It's not making it right now (partly) due to a tiny exhaust that I probably won't be able to replace till after ski season, but it still moves out pretty nicely.
