Hello Y'all

i get a lot of white smoke on the right side apon start-up. My rig is still loosing prime when turned off for longer periods and all the smoke makes me think it's a leak somewhere on the right side(intake lines and return hoses). Does a anyone how to test these, if this is the case? Could the smoke be caused by something else?

THANKS

White smoke on only one side?

Are you losing coolant?

The losing prime can be due to some kind of leak in the fuel supply system, usually not a big concern on the return lines. The leak can be (usually) a leaky throttle shaft on the injection pump. This leak will weep a small amount of diesel (which you will get a sniff of when popping the hood), but will allow air to enter the pump, which allows some fuel to exit the pump back to the tank (not all, but some). A cracked line anywhere supplying fuel to the injection pump will also contribute to this. Check for cracked lines where the rubber is breaking down near hose end connections. This will usually occur on the Primary fuel filter rubber exiting the filter housing, and then to the metal line, on the secondary fuel filter rubber exit line going to the pump, and finally at the injection pump. One other overlooked place to check is at the fuel lift pump on the passenger's side of the engine, there will be one rubber line conection there. These are the main sources on the engine for air into the lines.

The white smoke at startup can be due to no glow plug operation on that side of the engine too. Check your glow plugs, then check the voltage to the glow plugs when the controller tells the relay to turn them on. It's possible that you're only getting glow on one side of the engine! So, get a helper to cycle the ignition while you take either a 12v test light (easiest, and best) to the leads going to the glow plugs or a digital volt/ohm meter. Having glow on only one side of the engine WILL give you a white smokey start only on one side, and will make the engine harder to start and could contribute to the thinking the engine is loosing it's prime.

Things to check, then come back...

My truck smokes (white) real bad on the driver's side when it is cold and I don't plug it up. Mine seems to be temperature related. It clears right up after it runs awhile.
