The MT 480 I rec ently purchased off of e-bay worked very nicely.
My idle speed was a little low (635 rpm or so), so I adjusted that.
My timing is at approx. 5* BTDC at idle.
Do I understand correctly that I need to check the timing and adjust to 4-5* BTDC at 1300 rpms?

Congratulations on you new toy!
4-5* BTDC at 1300-1500 is a good place to start. Depending on your fueling, you may want more or less advance to control how your turbo spools up. More advance will decrease black smoke, but increase turbo lag. Too little advance will increase black smoke, yet decrease turbo lag.
These are just general guidelines. It takes a few sessions of adjusting the timing and fuel rate to find your perfect setup.

Sorry about that. I think that 4-5* BTDC @ 1500 is still a good place to start.
Advancing the timing will make your engine burn the fuel more completely, and black smoke on hard acceleration should decrease greatly. This assumes that you have stock fueling no greater than about 55 cu mm per stroke. You should also notice a slight power increase and a drop in EGTs.
You can increase the fuel metering on your pump for even more power if you like. 1/8th turn would be a good place to start.
