As the title suggests, what model of Isspro tach is appropriate for my 1985 6.2L Suburban? I know I have to mount magnets on the dampener, but there are several models to choose from in a variety of rpm gradients.

For my 85 6.2 Isspro Tach# R8503 and Sensor Kit# R8900 work quiet well since 3 years.
Even with lot of 4x4 the 2 magnets on the damper still glue pretty good. Only have to wash the mud off the magnets and sensor from time to time ;)

Is this an easy thing to install? What exactly is involved?

I went with a borg-warner tach on my old 6.2L. It is a 3 3/8" diameter face and uses a mag pick-up off the flywheel teeth. We used the 0-3500rpm version. Bought it thru Carquest. Welded up a pad on the aluminum inspection cover and tapped a 3/4-14 hole for the sensor.

My old engine had an Isspro tach that used the magnets that were glued to the crank shaft vibration dampner. However, when I got my new engine I switch to a VDO Tach. The model I used is designed to work off the alternator. I know Isspro, VDO and Autometer make tachs that work off the alternator. The VDO works great and it fits 2" guage pod I have on top of the dash. If I ever decide to rebuild my dash and replace the speedo and 3" fuel guage, I would probably go with a match pair of Isspro speedo and tach guages.
