View Full Version : which 5 speed will work?

Hello All,
I found a 5 speed, but the guy says the bell housing is integrated to the trans (he says no fit :( Will this one work? or is the other one where the bell housing is separate from the trans?

Which 5 speed did you find? Some have integral bellhousings and some don't. What's the tag say?

if its integral it is not an nv4500

Just as I thought. He said it was a nv3500 with integral bell housing. Thanks guys!

An NV3500/3550 is what comes stock in 03+ Jeep Wranglers. It's meant as a very light duty 5 speed, and it's first gear is ~3.5:1. It's not the best match for our engines, but its bigger brother, the NV4500, is quite nice. Keep an eye out for one of those. It has a nice granny first and an overdrive.

If I remember correctly, one DP member had a NV3500 behind his 6.5TD in a short bed regular cab pickup (a Doc Lee special), and ended up killing it after 100,000 towing miles. He subsequently upgraded to an NV4500. While that's a typical interval for clutch replacement, that might be too frequent for transmission R&Rs.

What happened to the the transmission was the pilot bearing failed dumping all the needle bearings inside the space ahead of the pilot shaft. This allowed the input shaft to get out of true alignment and caused the transmission front input shaft bearing to wear excessively.When in second or third gear under torque this would cause a vibration but not in forth or fifth gear,I towed a 21' Airsream that only weighed 5300 lbs. all over the western Unoted States for 110,000 miles.If the pilot bearing had not failed I would still be running it.However, I never towed in overdrive except when I was trying to outrun the trailer eastbound down Pipestone Pass.
The transmission is too light for towing. The ratios of 4.01:1 first,2.32:1 second,1.4:1 third, 1:1 fourth,0.75:1 fifth were perfect for my truck. One other thing is this tranny only held 1.8 quarts of 15w40 oil.The NV4500 is by far a strong enough transmission as you can tow in overdrive,just watch the EGTs real close.I have a temp gauge in my NV4500 and have never seen it over 240. Usually runs between 180 and 220.One bad point about the NV4500 is it is hard to speed shift into 5th when going through the quarter mile.

Another note. You can use a NV4500 from a Dodge in conjuction with a Chevrolet belhousing and a adapter plate from Advance Adapters. The input shaft is longer on a Dodge than Chevy but the adapter plate takes up that exter lengh. Splines are the same. This months Fourwheel and Offroad magazine had a good article on all the 5 speed transmissions

Thanks. Both trucks are proof that the American dollar can be spent in a number of ways, and businesses will gladly accept as many of them as you have. If you are low on said dollars, some companies make plastic that apparently is just as good. ;)

How would one go about putting a gauge on the tranny to check its temp? Is it possible to use the adapter for a water temp gauge and go ito the drain hole of the nv4500 to put the sender in the tranny?

The NV4500 has cover plates on both sides for a PTO. I took one off and welded one half of a 1/4" collar onto it then drilled it out to put my temperature sending unit in it.
