Howdy
We just took our '84 6.2 van from northern Minnesota to Yellowstone. when I got the van a few months ago I replaced all fluids with synthetic(except the oil)and did all the standard things that should be done. I also fabricated a sort of "ram-air" free flowing intake system. The motor already had a tuned up pump, new injectors and a good dual exhaust. On the trip I got about 26-27mpg at the low altitudes and about 22-24 up high.(3.48 gears) Power was not the same as my 6.5 :D but I never had any problems passing.
No real questions on this post just a FYI and a Thanks !

That's great, man.
It inspires me to finish up my van - with 4:10 gears, I get more like 19 mpg and I'm looking forward to 3.42s someday. 'Course maybe your foot is lighter as well....
I'd be interested in knowing how you did your intake setup, what with the limited space under the so-called hood of the van.

The intake was made from a gasser that I found that has the large diameter intake duct and the snorkle that bolts onto the header on the pass side. I had to do some welding to get the proper opening/flange on the aircleaner housing. Also a diverter plate inside the housing to slow down any high speed insects! My neighboor is a salvage yard so I'm blessed with easy access to parts. I would post some pictures but it really isn't that much to see! Looks pretty much stock.
How does the veg oil work out for you?
The veggie oil has been workin' well now for a year and a half. If I let it idle for a while, the general area starts to smell like someone's BBQing chicken!
The intake snorkel you found - is it bigger than the factory diesel one? All the vans I've seen at the wrecking yard seem to use the same size hole in the front header - if you found something bigger, do you have any idea what it came off of? Or do you mean it's the same size snorkel, but designed to feed a larger hose? I already got rid of the silencer and put in a straight piece of 3" hose which I sort of taped up to the cut down snorkel - it's crude but that damn duct tape'll do miracles if ya work it enough! Anyway, I was hoping to eventually get to proper fittings for a 4" hose.
Thanks again for the tips.

Not sure what the snorkle came from. It is about twice the size of the stock unit. So oval shaped about 6 x 2.5". I used a air-cleaner input flange from a 88 chev gasser 5.7 and welded it in place of the original Diesel unit. I may have some pictures of the parts before I put them on. Email me direct and I'll see what I can find.
