Transmission Type

I looked at a Diesel Class B ( van ) type
RV, 1992 6.2l diesel. Guy said it was ordered special from the factory.

Transmission had 3 forward positions on the
shift indicator, 1,2 and D with a box around it. Like older Ford...

He said it was heavy duty from a cadilac, and
had overdrive. tryed to see underneath,
tight fit, but I did not recognize it as any
Chev type. He was not very knowledgeable,
and did not get much more info .

Is it possible that other GM ( Caddy/olds, etc )
tranny's mate to a 6.2l????

Well I know that the bellhousing adapters for 4BT Cummins used in bread trucks are drilled for both Chevy/GMC and BOP trannies, but a Cadillac tranny isn't going to be any stronger than a Chevy/GMC tranny because they're all the same inside. If I had to make a guess as to what it is, I'd say 4L80E most likely, but it could also be an Allison (w/o overdrive.)

D with square around it was the early overdrive indicator for the 3-speed + overdrive 200R4, used in rwd Caddys, Buicks, Olds, and Pontiacs.

Bad transmission, reworked some for the Buick Grand National series.

That indicator, also used in Chevys and Chev\GMC trucks for the 700R4, had 1-2-3- "D in square".

Caddy may have had the 700R4 early on, but took the 200R4 until they went FWD with the 4T40 and 4T80 series.

That Van trans is anybody's guess, as NH2112 indicated.

Square pan is 700R4
Long narrow pan is 200R4
Long wide pan is 4L80E

Iirc, Allison had a "small" 4-speed, but was granny low on T400 3-speed, resulting in no Park position.
