New Injection pump makes whining noise

I just installed a new injection pump and right at start up I get a noise like a bad bearing or a shaft that is vibrating in a sleeve bearing. I thought I had burned up the starter, but my neighbor (knows lots about these things) gave it a listen and came out from under the hood with a grip look on his face and said it sounded like it was coming from the new IP. It makes a wheezing/whinning sound for about 0.5-1.5 seconds right as the engine starts up. Any ideas on how to determine if it really is the IP or feedback on what is wrong with the pump?

If the noise goes away after a couple of seconds, it's probably not the inj. pump. Make sure the starter pinion isn't sticking. You can also use a long screwdriver or mechanic's stethoscope to tray and narrow down the source of the noise.
