View Full Version : Turbo drain line

I am about to put the turbo I got off of Ebay on my K-30... I had to make my own drain line for the turbo, I plan to use 1/4" copper line from a fitting on the turbo, to a tapped hole in the fuel pump adapter plate. Will this work ok? I don't know what size the orig return line was, but the turbo had a 1/2" NPT threaded hole in the bottom. Is the 1/4" line going to be large enough to allow the used oil to flow out, without backing up, and causing undue stress on the turbo oil seals? It comes from a 1/8" port, so I would think that the volume of flow would be small enough that the 1/4" line will work ok. Just wondering what any of you might think... thanks!

The 1/4" tubing won't be large enough, and copper is a poor choice of material. The supply line, 1/8" NPT, is actually larger than 1/4" tubing I.D. The supply line is pressurized, and requires a lesser I.D. The drain is gravity, and requires a larger I.D. than if it were pressurized to allow the same movement of a fluid, especially a high viscocity fluid like oil. I suggest using 3/8" or larger hose, 1/2" would be more ideal. Hose (and pipe~NPT) is measured by its inside diameter, tubing is measured by its outside diameter.

1/2" at least and use a piece of silicon thick wall tubing to join the drain tube to the stub or nozzle (you're installing) on the blanking plate or drain pan. This will allow for stress relief as the turbo expands/contracts and help insulate against some of the vibration.

Ok, I will over size the drain tube as much as I can, I have a 3/8" pipe nipple I will cut on an angle, and weld/braze on to the fuel pump plate. Where can I buy the proper rubber hose for the drain line? I guess it would need to be high temp, and rated for oil use.... is this something the local NAPA store would have?
Other questions: I got my EGT and boost gages today. Where should the EGT be installed in the exaust system? At one of the manifolds, or in the down pipe, after the turbo? How far away? Where is the best place to get accurate and usable readings?
As for the boost gage, it comes with nylon tubing, and takes 1/8" NPT fitting... where should this be put? I was going to tap the housing that goes on the intake, should give a good reading of what the boost is at the intake, right?
Thanks for your input... can't wait to see how the turbo helps the truck...

Diesel crawler - See no one answered your question - If you go to Kennedy's site, and poke around, he has some excellent pic's of placement of EGT probe, and the tap for the boost gauge.

Don,
I'm not sure what kind it is, I got it off ebay. It's not a banks, or ats, all I do know is that the turbo has rootamater stamped on it... and a/r 85? I'll look closer. What ever it is, it should help the get up and go a little bit...
MTT, I'll look at Kennedy's page.... thanks.
Project not going as fast as I'd like, I'm too busy.... Grrrrr.....

The specs of the turbo sound like the BAE system that I pulled off of a junker. Is there anything cast into the exhaust manifold? I'll be building a drain soon also as well as the crossover pipe and down pipe. I wasn't able to get them off of the old truck. On that install they had put a fitting into the pan for the return. I'll likely go with the lift pump plate myself.

crawler, what are you using for an exhaust manifold?the banks ones are tapped on the bottom side right below the turbo flange(and it's hell) to get too.definately want to put the probe in before putting the manifold on.

When I got the turbo off ebay, it came with the manifold, cross over pipe, turbo, oil pres. line, it was mostly all there. I did find a tapped hole in the top side of the manifold, and got an adaptor to fit the EGT probe. Should work, if I get a chance to spend some time working on it... been so busy latly.
