Ok kids, how are y'all doing out on the highway where it counts? I have reported my latest G-Tech certified 0-60 time in the final (second) installment of my 700R4 ARTICLE. (http://www.thedieselpage.com/reviews/lee700r4-2.htm)

That's right, you have to actually LEAVE THE FORUM to read the article, if you want the result. And this is without any "steeeeenkin' turbo".

So how are all you TD60 freaks and twin-turbo fanatics doing compared to my little red naturally-aspirated truck ? ? ?

My 0-60... 24.74 seconds. You could probably do 0-60-0-60 in that time... smile.gif

Ambient temp: 10 degrees F
Elevation: 7700 ft (ish)

83 K5 Blazer, 700-R4, 3/4 ton diffs, 4" lift, 4.10 gears, 30.5 inch tires, ~320lbs of front bumper, ~400 lbs of stuff inside (including me).

215000 miles on my 6.2, banks turbo, j-code intake, blown head gasket.

We'll see how it does after new gaskets/heads/IP/injectors.

The factory time for an NA Hummer is 18 seconds, I estimate mine to be about 16 seconds now, but my speedo doesn't work and I don't have a G-tech so I am guessing. But the Hummer weighs about 6800 pounds. I hope to get that down to 13 or 14, i couldn't imagine sub 9's!! Tha must be like a rocket!! FYI the 2001 dodge cummins diesel I used to have ran about 10.9 with a K+N and straight pipe, but it weighed like 6700 pounds, but was fast compared to my hummer. Having a light truck sure helps

Well, I've never timed my 2.73:1-gear-havin' truck as far as 0-60 times but as I'm leaving town to go to work there's a shallow incline I have to take from a dead stop & right turn. About 0.2 mile up the hill is a 55mph sign, and if I take off and shift perfectly I can be heading for 50 as I pass the sign. It's a little slower in the summer due to humidity, but the "winter turbocharger" effect is definitely noticable!

The TD60 will be going in a 93 W350 now, and I'm pretty sure its 1275-lb weight won't help with jackrabbit starts. Stock it develops 173hp and about 450lb-ft torque (can't remember at what RPM) and since it uses the same family of Bosch inline injector pumps as the 5.9L power upgrades should be easy - 400hp/800+ lb-ft of torque, here we come? I'm starting to buy parts to build the engine for my K10, but that WILL have a steenking turbo so it won't be a fair comparison. Maybe I'll do the run with my plow and sander on to level the playing field smile.gif

Uh,what`s a TD60?Cuz I dunno.My precision timing of my`91 Sub is"not fast".But it still just feels good.

A TD60 is a 5.5L Volvo inline-6 diesel, I got mine out of an 83 F613 box truck. It's comparable to the Cummins 5.9L in everything but weight, where it's a bit heavier. I'm going to be putting it into a W350 with a dead Cummins, so there won't be much to do as far as beefing up the front end compared to putting into a K10.

I performed my 0-60 tests using the trusty Oliver Diesel "seat-o-the-pants" method while adhering to the strict rules of "close enough engineering." (You won't find that in any ASTM standard! :D ) I did several runs and averaged the results.

Without turbo:
Slow

With turbo:
Less Slow

And there you have it. Conclusive proof of improved performance! :D :D

I never timed my steenkin' turbo'ed M1028, but it could keep up with the wife's Duramax off the line to 60mph. My 5.5 second TRW 9-3 Saab Viggen can still beat both of them though :D ! Boy racers also have no chance, unless they have actually upgraded the engine and not just added neon go faster lighting etc!

Of course, all of this is moot now, since the drive train and engine have been sold. However, I expect to up the ante with a modestly tuned Cummins 6BT producing 450HP with 945 ft/lbs+ torque - yummy!

Well doc,

As soon as I find a stopwatch and the time to try, I'll find out were both my steenkin'turbo's get me, home most of the time :D

Since I don't have the funds for a G-tech... Utilizing my speedo and the built in clock on my 83 suburban, I get around 9-10 seconds for 60 mph.

6.2 w/banks turbo, 3 inch exhaust, dual thermostats and high volume water pump, 6.5 mechanical injection system, and stock 3.42 rear. My tranny was custom built by Mad Dog Transmissions out of Tampa for less than $800 to a 500HP rating. They would of built it to 700HP, but my truck will never see it.

Getting less than 10 sec for a NA is exceptional. On a sub, I doubt it would be possible without a turbo.

Since my m1008 doesnt even have a lighter socket, the g-tech was out. Not worth wiring up for this slowpoke, besides a sundial would be more appropriate.

Using a stopwatch, it was 16 flat. Good thing is that its the only vehicle I own that wouldn't raise a cops eyebrow while doing the test. Not a very thrilling ride.

Stock M1008, 4.56 gear, turbo 400, 38 inch tires, approx 6400 lbs with me and some junk in the bed.

My M1028, pre-turbo and upgrades, accelerated to 60mph only slightly faster than my late grandmother could, on her bicycle - in fact it couldn't go faster than an indicated 58mph.

Heh, heh, heh, with 8500lbs, a stock 6.2, 4.10s, and 4X4 !?! Yes a 0-60 test would be a laughing matter. However, I did impress my boss with its ability to almost keep up with his '94 stock D*dge of similar weight. Doc, sounds like you've got the combo nailed for fast N/A times though.

Hi
I noticed you use a G-Tech meter. How accurate are they?I ordered one to use as a comparison,as i add upgrades to my truck.I'm hoping to get it aboput the time i get it running.I'm going to put it together stock to see if the engin is worth putting any money into.I bought it with a block heater hanging by it's cord.Hoping new heads will fix it.Back to the meter, any comparisons done to verify it's acuracy?I'm more interested in seeing gaines in horsepower, not much hope of any great 0-60 times with a CC
3500 :D Thanks

The magazines that have tested it found it to be quite accurate compared to their more expensive calibrated equipment. The G-Tech was made possible by the mass-production of very accurate accelerometers for detecting collisions that should set off air-bags, and cheap digital signal processing chips used in GPS and other consumer gear.

I have my G-Tech permanently mounted on top of the dashboard in a custom adjustable mount for zeroing it out before recordable runs. Sits right next to my Passport radar detector, also permanently mounted on the top of the dashboard.

Doc, maybe you and the dieselpage need to set up a diesel drag racing event at a dragstrip somewhere, I could show up in an NA hummer and show you all the meaning of slow!!

Really I would love to know what kind of 1/4 mile times your truck could do. Does the G-tech measure 1/4 mile times?

CleviteKid
02-19-2004, 21:46
Yes, the G-Tech also measures 1/4 mile times. When I am not on the road looking at broken stuff, I will try to sneak away to the unofficial secret Miami street-racing strip and see what the numbers are.

For those of you in the Miami area, email me and I can give you the coordinates of the secret strip.

Even though I have the same Avant engine as yours cept for the steeeenking turbo I doubt that I could keep up with your little 2 wheel drive half a truck.
However I could possibly hook a chain on yours and drag it into the swamp. He He He

I decided to put a lighter socket in the M1008 and plug in the g-tech for more of this fun (humiliation?). 0-60 was 16.3 on the best run, pretty close to my hand timed numbers. The real shock was the 1/4 mile time - 22.0 @ 68mph. That's over five seconds to go from 60 to 68!!! But the most embarassing part was that I mentioned it to a buddy that raises American Quarter horses, he nearly passed out laughing. Seems that a good quarter horse can do a quarter mile in 21 seconds. I doubted him so I looked it up, even a race horse that goes longer distances isn't much behind. Secretariat ran the first qtr of the Belmont in 23.6 I NEED A TURBO !!!

My M1028 does pritty good in my opinion, better these cool winter days... that is, with the little (35" radial) tires on it, and 4.56:1 gears. I have no test equipment, and would bet the speedo is so far off, that any 'stop watch test' I could do would be pointless... The ol' beast will keep up with traffic well enough around town, and isn't too bad out on our local country roads... has no touble out-running Farmer Joe on his Massy Furguson tractor!
But... once you put the big tires on, speed is nothing more than daydreams... of the future plans of turbos... thoughts of intercoolers... ahhh.... meanwhile, we'll just go out and 'wheel the wee out of it! The N/A 6.2 really shines once you lock in the hubs, and hit low range. Works well for my driving style. Not to mention that the diesel rattle just plane sounds cool! **grin** gotta admit, I'm hooked...
By the way, kudos to the speed freaks... that's really awesome that you can get such numbers on the track... goes to show what can be done with these trucks. Keep it up...
Greg
