View Full Version : Need M1008 Alternator
Upon further inspection of my new toy, 86' M1008 truck, I notice that the alternator on the drivers side is missing. Is there anything unique about the M1008 units vs. a civilian alternator. What information is needed to purchase a replacement and where is a good place to purchase one? Thanks for your help.

If you're going to keep the 24v starting system, then you'll need a HD 100A 12V military alternator with an isolated ground - they are run in series to charge the batteries (hence the isolated ground). FYI: I happen to have 2 rebuilt ones for sale that I'll be ebaying shortly. mailto:hughami@yahoo.com
I also have a mint condition 24V GEAR REDUCTION starter motor which will be sold off as well. Gear Reduction starters weren't an OEM option and they're hard to find - I had mine specially built.
Or, you can convert the whole thing back to 12v. Thats what I did with mine, it is easy using the instructions at this site

Then you wont have to ever worry about getting stuck somewhere and not be able to find 24v parts. I can now get anything I need at any auto parts store. Also have the option of mounting the alternator on either side of the motor since you have brackets for both sides.
Britannic,
Thanks for the information. Have a follow-up question on the isolated ground. I found an alternatior from a chevy 35 van (ambulance) that has an alternator that is the same size, 100 amps, and has a ground connection/bolt on the back of the alternator, is this the correct alternator? Also do two black wires one large and one small both connect to the ground on the back of the alternator.
thanks for the help,
Les

The ground has to be insulated, since only one of the two alternators is physically grounded to engine/frame, the other alternator's isolated ground is connected in series with it's twin to make 24v.

To make sure I understand, the drivers side alternator is grounded to the engine/frame and the passenger side alternator grond is isolated from the engine/frame, and is obtained from the drivers side alternator.
Is this ground for the pass side alternator one of the two black wires that attaches to the back of drivers side alternator?
thanks,
Les

If that wire is bolted to the intake manifold or some other ground and comes from an alt. stud, then yes.
