A friend and fellow Diesel Page member just aquired what he thought was a 6.5NA from a 93 GM 3500 series cube van. Once he got it, he was puzzled by the fact that it has a mechanical pump.
Numbers from the block are as follows:
12555506 on left rear of block
6167 on right rear
Nothing else is visible. Any ideas ? Is this a 6.5 or has someone installed a 6.2 at some point ?
Thanks

Electronic DS4 6.5L injection pumps weren't introduced until 1994. I'm not even certain that vans even got the electronic pumps in 94....seems like they were used later. However, all 6.5L engines produced in '92 and '93 had mechanical DB2 pumps just like the 6.2L.
I'm pretty sure also that the 506 is a 6.5L block.
Most people generally consider the '93 6.5L as the best you could get...the last mechanically injected diesel GM used. In fact, I just had my 6.2L injection pump rebuilt as a 6.5L turbo 4911 pump, the last, best mechanical pump GM offered. However, I'll bet the n/a 6.5L your friend has probably doesn't have the 4911 pump. They usually only came on turbo engines.

All 1993 models should be mechanical, both turbo and N/A. The POS PMD didn't show up until M/Y 1994.
The block can't be original. You can verify that by locating the date code. The code should be a letter, followed by 3 numbers. The last number will indicate the last digit of the cast year. If it has two diamond shapes, and a 6 digit date code, it is a Navistar casting. 506's are supposed to be one of the latest castings available. IIRC, a "599" block should have been installed in a '93.
