My 6.2 has a lot of white smoke on startup since it started getting cold. Smoke clears out in a min and I notice that the shake goes away too. Time for new glow plugs? Just wondering what might be going to break soon. 49K on truck since new.
If the "RI" stands for Rhode Island, and you're getting temps like we are up in NH, then I'd say it's normal for cold weather starting. Mine blows white smoke for 30 seconds or so, and that's with ~1 year old Kennedy glow plugs. If it still blows white smoke on warm days, or takes several glow cycles to start, then I'd replace glow plugs.

You might want to check each one for continuity to make sure they're all working. Three winters ago I found 3 out of 8 dead. Made a big difference when I replaced them. Otherwise, the smoke is normal.
Easy way to check the glow plugs. Use a test light aligator clip connected to the pos. terminal. Take the power wire off the glow plug, touch the spade end. If it lights up it's good. If it dosn't is bad. Hope all are good. Steven

If you have a multimeter, set it to "Ohms", measure between ground (engine block) and the connector for the wire to the glow-plug. The resistance should be about 1 to 2 Ohms. If so, the glow-plug is good, if more, it is bad.
Glow plugs can fool you.
The little buggers an go south inside and still show good on a test light and not heat worth beans.
The only real fool proof way to check them is to ewmove them and hook them up to a battery with jumper cables and test for 5 seconds max and they should be red hot over most of the stem from the middle down to the tip. If only the middle glows and then only dull and maybe not all over toss the plug and replace it with a new one.
