View Full Version : Torque Converter Stall Speed
I'm currently getting ready to put a engine in my truck very similar to Britannic's . I'm currently trying to figure out what stall speed would be best for the torque converter. Britanic said he is running a 1700 but was suggested a 1200. I was sort of thinking slightly less than 1700 either a 1500 or a 1600. The torque converter is for a 700r4. I'm wondering what stall speed you guys think would work best? I don't tow much at all and I accelerate aggressively a little more than half the time. My truck has 4.10 gearing with 32 inch tires.

This question will be addressed in Part 2 of my article on custom 700R4 trannies for diesels, on www.TheDieselPage.com (http://www.TheDieselPage.com) around Feb. 15. I don't tow anything, and if I do it will be a boat (which my wife will buy, own, use and I will maintain ??) on flat roads in Florida.
I selected a custom torque converter in between the diesel RV type (with a 1200-1500 rpm stall), and a heavy duty gas converter (1800-2100 rpm stall). Mine is specified at 1500-1800 rpm stall, and works fine for zooming around town empty and putting the hurt on Mustangs and Camaros. Like Goldilocks says: "Not too tight, not too loose, JUST RIGHT."
One key to having fun with this transmission is to run it without lockup when you are running light, level, and have lots of transmission cooling. This allows the torque converter to actually act like a torque converter and multiply the input torque, even in fourth gear, and allows for easier downshifts to third without wearing the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC). But you MUST have a switch to allow the TCC to lock on the Freeways, Turnpikes, and when hauling . . . heavy loads that is, not hauling a**.

This is about where my stall speed is and I agree with Clevite Kid about the torque multiplication in all gears!
My setup can be switched to lock in 2nd, D and OD, unlocked in 2nd, D and OD, or have automatic lock up in OD above 50mph.
YMMV, but I can heartily recommend the 1500-1700rpm stall convertor for performance, fun and practicality.
Thanks Dr. Lee and Britannic. I was driving in a 20-30mph head wind today and it was all I could do to maintain 50mph up a 6% grade with egt of 1000*. Foot was floored. :mad: I can't wait till I install this engine later this month. :D I'm thinking of going with the 1500-1700 stall speed, sounds about right. Still open to suggestions.
When I ordered my trans from Art Carr, we discussed vehicle weight, engine output, gearing, tire size, and how much and how often I would be towing. With a turbo'd 6.2, it will give me a 15-1600 rpm stall speed. They told me that with a "stock" 6.2, it would have a stall speed of about 1300 rpm. If I was not going to run a turbo, they said that I should run something that would give a 16-1700 rpm stall speed.
