View Full Version : Exhaust backpressure test?

Would it make any sense to monitor exhaust backpressure to find the right turbine AR while playing with turbo sizes?

If the backpressure is low, will there be no or low boost?

Will high backpressure result in high coolant temperatures?

Will high backpressure result in high EGT?

My guess is that you are right about the effects off high/low backpressures.

The main thing is to have high pressure before the turbo and low or no pressure after te turbo.

If the pressure before the turbo is too high the engine will stall because the exhaust gasses will not flow out off the cylinder to make space for fresh air, leading to overfueling and high EGT

Am I right to say that the waste gate play a dual role, first to get rid off backpressure and secondly to limit turbo rpm or boost.

What I want to measure is how high the pressure before the turbo is, and then determine what the relation is between backpressure, boost and EGT.

I guess that why waste gated turbo

Danie,

Main reason for wastegates is to have a small and fast responding turbo on a big engine.
Fun thing is you can play with the settings :D

Let us know your findings and see if the theory matches the reallity.
