View Full Version : Front axle disconnect

The front axle actuator on my '88 has failed and I would like to replace it with a newer style one. I have an actuator from a '95 (I think) but the plug is different. Also, I only have one side of the plug. I was going to cut the other side off, but it was already gone. Can anyone tell me how to wire this thing properly? I assume I can get the pigtail from a dealer, but my experiences with trying to get tech info from them have not been pleasent!

The '95 actuator should work for you. However, you will need the retro wiring harness that GM offers for this conversion. GM part #12376316 - Harness K

Aside from the correct connector plugs, the harness includes a wire length that runs back to the transfer case harness for a splice connection. Without the transfer case connection, the actuator will engage when 4WD is selected, but won't disengage.

It turns out I have several wiring problems, and I just want to run a wire to a switch to actuate the actuator. I have a 2 wire actuator, and I assume one is power, and the other is ground. Am I right?

Can one really order electric "plug" parts from the dealer? I tried to order the ends for my 95 wiring harness (at the transmission) and was informed a new harness was all that I could order. They stated they did not sell the different plug ends.

What is the advantage of a "new style" thermal actuator?

No longer 'thermal', It actuates within two or three seconds, instead of a minute or two.

I just Changed mine out last week on the Suburban because the old thermal one failed. It took about 1 1/2 hr Start to finish. The new one is servo motor driven actuator. Work fine and quick. These are the parts #'s I used.
Obtain the following GM part numbers:
(1) 26060073 Actuator
(1) 88959465 Harness/Spacer Kit
