How much does timing affect diesel hammer?,on my Dr Lee clone engine it really hammers on cold startup and is not exactly quiet at normal operating temp.
The timing is still set as The Diesel Depot set it at 10* at idle falling off to 5* at 1100 I have no idea where this setting falls in relation to stock settings.
I have my new Rotunda Timing Meter from Britannic and am anxious to use it but don't know where to set it at other than where its at now.
In a related matter is a DB4 pump quieter? I have seen several 6.5 trucks at work and they are very quiet with very little rattle, or are they timed late for emission purposes?.
Britannic if you see this which offset is best to use 1,3,5,7 are all easy cyls to reach, and what timing do you recommend? Thanks.....Merle

The Snap-On MT480 uses the #3 cylinder, and the 99.5* offset. The #3 and #5 glowplugs are the easiest to remove, so I would go with one of those. Your Rotunda has a variable offset (I think), so you can pick any of the cylinders you want.

As for the clatter, my engine is particularly loud with the HPCA on, and still pretty loud until operating temps come up. It's definitely louder than the 96 6.5TD.

#3 is good with 99.5* offset on the Rotunda and 5* at 1100rpm is about right. See what you have at 1300-1400rpm.
