Howdy
What are the real differences between the 1982 RED 6.2 and the "other" 6.2s???
Thanks in advance!

It's the one that started it all.

Supposedly GM cast this block with the highest nickel content of all, and it's more resistant to cracking. Soon after production GM changed the metal again to cut down on machining costs for the 83+ engines.

If you set a red '82 6.2L block next to an '83 block, you can see a few minor differences, such as the front timing cover area has a slightly different shape....and other insignificant details. It's the higher nickel block that is the desired feature, though. I know that after running my red block 120K HARD miles, the block was crack-free. The Diesel Depot also claims that the red blocks are higher nickel.

I have never seen any official GM documention or anything like that to back up the strength claims, but the fact that I've personally never heard or seen of a cracked red block makes me wonder...
