Another interesting detail: South Carolina has no state inspection, therefore cars that are in good running order don't command a higher price. You can drive a smoking pile of junk.

South Carolina is an different place, and quite possibly a different planet. My brother has spent the last eight years doing his Ph.D. at Clemson (he's done now), and though it's still considered the South, he has found it to be quite different from Texas.
