Rag joint play

Hi,
How much play should there be in the rag joint steering shaft to steering gear coupler (78 Chevy 1/2 ton 2WD)? I have a loose steering problem and when I use a screwdriver to move the joint it seems like there is a lot of play, both rotational and up-down/left right. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The rag joints are cheap and easy to replace. If you're tracking down loose steering, it's a sensibile and cost effective place to start.

As I found, replacing the rag joint made a great difference in steering feel. Also worth mentioning: I had just previously installed all new Moog ball joints, tie rod ends, and drag link ends. The rag joint was just the last wearing component in the puzzle.
