Strike up a conversation about automatic transmissions for our GMC and Chevy diesel trucks, particularly the '82 - '89 6.2L trucks, and you will hear one of two opinions, both good and bad. We learn how a performance 700R4 is built and how it performs.

A little good news.... The 6.2L diesel has performed well for many people for over two decades and for hundreds of thousands of miles. Here's just one example that has been around the block a time or two.

This should be good, I am all to familiar with transmisson problems, After the old man put in ten I got the truck did some changes, and I am sure he would love it back now.

Great article on the 700R4, probably will be able to tweek mine a bit. My transmission and van (not motor or rear end) is pushing 1/2 million miles. I rebuilt the original tranny, and is still working good. I put a few upgrades but still have the original 7 vane pump & servo. One thing I did when I rebuilt it was replace all the bushings, this helped to raise the oil presures back up.

I'm one of those who loves the 700 for its deep first gear and tall overdrive. When I put the 6.2L in my '81 back in '96, I just went to the salvage yard and got a used 700 from a '90 model truck. That was over 100K miles ago, and I don't know how many miles were on the tranny when I got it. It's never given me a moment's trouble.

Congratulations to John and Logan on keeping one of the rare short-bed diesel trucks on the road. This is only about the fourth one that I am aware of.

Read, read, read. Also there are repair video's out there on rebuilding/upgrading 700R4s. Also you must be very, very clean. No lint cloths, dry parts with air only, not cloths ever. My 2c.

I bought a rebuilt 700R4 about a month ago and had it installed. The shop said that they beefed it up for me. They had the shift points set too high for my liking. So, they reset the cable for me.

These tranny's have always made me feel that there should be another shift about half way between 3rd & 4th.

Be careful with cable adjustments to try to change shift points. The proper way to adjust shift points is with the transmission governor (all shift points) or the biasing springs in the valve body (adjust just one or two shift points).

A trick I learned from Don Marcone at FOURTH GEAR INC. (http://www.fourthgearinc.com/) is to run the tranny UNLOCKED in all four gears around town, in traffic, and when not hauling or towing a big load. But have an override switch on the dashboard to allow the tranny to lock on the open road or when towing. Running unlocked, you will find that the torque converter itself can supply the torque multiplication to fill the hole in between third and fourth gears when you want to participate in the Stop-Light Grand Prix.

Hey Doc!

Currently my 700R4 only locks up in 4th. When I tow my trailer, I leave it in direct. I have been wanting to re-wire my tranny so that I could have manual control of lockup in 2nd and 3rd as well as 4th.

In unlocked 3rd gear, the rpms are really high at 65 mph or more. In locked 4th, the rpms are too low and I don't have enough torque left to tow my trailer unless the terrain is completely flat. Will my stock TC be able to handle the stress of towing my trailer when locked in 3rd?

These links are down MP. I'm getting my 700R4 rebuilt next Monday. I'd like to print them for the tech.
