Manual Transmission behind a 6.2

Did GM ever install a manual transmission behind a 6.2?
If so, what model unit was installed? 4 Speed? 5 Speed?

If not and I wanted to drop a 6.2 (or 6.5) in a 4X4 truck, what manual tranny would you recommend?
NV4500? (very pricey)

Yes, GM put a manual behind the 6.2. I belive it was an SM465 I don't think that they put a NV4500 behind a 6.2. The Sm465 was a 4 speed overdrive transmission, quite odd. I'm not a big fan of manual transmissions behind the 6.2, mainly because every 6.2/6.5 that I've torn apart that had a standard behind it had cracked main webs, I don't know if that is a coincidence or not..

It's possible to install a manual though.

The most common was the Sm 465 4-sp w/granny gear. Also used, but MUCH less common was the NP A-833OD (option code MM7) which has an OD for 4th. I wouldn't recommend the latter for much towing as it is a derivative of the 4-sp that went in late '60's Mopar muscle cars (Mine hasn't liked the power of the 454 pulling the weight of the truck). Later on, there was a Getrag 5-sp, but I haven't heard much good about it. After that came the NV-4500, the best of all in my book.

Hey John, looks like we replied at nearly the same time! I just finished re-ringing the motor in my crew cab and had the block magged. Found no cracks! So there's one for the books (maybe the only one!)

John, what is your source for the SM465 having overdrive? It is my understanding that 4th gear is 1:1.

NP A-833OD is what I had meant for the manual tranny that had the OD. 84 Convert corrected me on that. I knew of the 465, had made the assumption that it was the 4speed I've seen in these trucks. Sorry guys, bad info.

I have a 85 6.2 that had the 4sp with OD. I replaced it with the NVG4500.

The orginal trans was replaced 2 times ( I was told that the bearings kept failing ) and needed to be replaced again. Average life span seemed to be about 40,000 miles. The NVG4500 has about 90,000 on it presently with no problems so far.

It may be pricey, but it was worth it to me.

I don't think the Getrag 5 spd. was ever offered with the 6.2L. According to old sales brochures, from '88-'91, the only manual trans offered with the 6.2L was the SM465. For '92-'93, the NV4500 was the manual trans that was offered.

my 92 1/2 came with a 6.2 and an nv4500,just turned 444,444 miles yesterday.

The V12 jaguar has the same GM bellhousing bolt patern and runs the TH400 tranny. There are also 4,5 and 6 speed manuals available.

They are plentifull in breakers over here.

Anyone gone down this route for a manual box for a 6.2.

I'm not anti English, I'm pro Scottish. Well dont feel bad. We can't make up our own minds here either. Different part of the same country, different names/expressions for the same part.

Breakers I take it are Wrecking yards here. So what ever you can find to fit, experiment! Keep in mind the amount of tourque you are dealing with. If you are towing this is critical.

Someone started putting Jaguare rear ends in hot rods here years ago. Just because it hasn't been done before, doesn't mean it wont work. :rolleyes:

I have a 1984 K10 with a 4spd manual with OD. 105,000 on the odo (original miles) and it has had no work, other than a clutch.

It does have a weird "drumming" noise whenever it the clutch is pressed in....
