I'm installing the dual idler set from DSG, Ok
So, as i'm taking everything apart, I see that my pump is set to the right (passenger side) of the line on the timing cover. Do I go back to lining up the marks after installing the new gears, just bring it back to stock ? Or am I best to set it back where it is now ? I have turned up the adjusting screw 1/4 previously.

The pump (IF it is the pump original to the mark) was aligned with the mark after assembly at the factory. Typically, as the timing chain stretched over the years, you would advance the timing to counter act the chain stretch by moving the pump toward the DRIVER side of the vehicle. The pump being on the PASSENGER side of the mark would indicate the timing had been retarded at some point (again IF the pump was the original to the mark, all bets are off if the pump had been changed at some point).

For me, when I installed my dual idler gears, I aligned the pump with the mark; however, after dynamically timing the engine, this was much too advanced and I had to move my pump to the PASSENGER side a fair bit. This was due to the fact the gears have no slack in them like even a new chain does. The timing from the factory when the mark was made, took into account the slack in the chain.

Hope this helps.

Take the timing marks and line them up. Then take it immediately over to a diesel shop to have it properly timed. The marks don't mean anything really once you have torn into the engine and changed something, i.e the gears or the pump...
