When you pull your block apart, you'll want to pay close attention to cracking on the main webs. If you have a crack free stock bore block, then go with your block, at least you know something about it. As far as a C code block and a J code block there are NO differences, absolutly the same block. The differences come in the pre-cups in the heads and the intake that bolts up top. So if your block is OK, rebuild it. If its cracked, then go for the surplus block to build.
My '82 c block had no cracks at all after 22 years of making absolutely no power. smile.gif
Any figures on how much one would pay for a block with no cracks, .030 over with new cam bearings and block hot tanked ready to go?

Depents on the casting number, some blocks are more wanted then others.
