I see after playing with my IP that my balancer is getting wobbly. Parked truck for the winter today and am preparing to do timing gear set soon. Where should I get a replacement balancer ? Is it best to buy a new GM piece or is there something better ? (Price and or quality ) I understand this is a leading cause of crank failure. Hope it's not too late.

I purchased a new GM balancer from Chevrolet, but there are after market ones out there. I have a part number - See my last post in this thread:

The best GM price is Team Chevrolet in Scottsbluff, NE, John Dickinson, 800-658-4017. teamparts@teamchev.com. I think the price was $193?? No, I don't work for them but I have ordered quite a few parts from them. Free shipping for orders over $100.

There are two parts on the front of the crank for balancing. The harmonic balancer, and the dampner pulley. The dampner pulley (the part that has the belts running on it) is the expensive one, thats a dealer only item. You'll want to pull yours and examine the rubber on it, also if the bolts had shifted. I replaced mine on my 86 C10 and it wasn't that bad.

My bad! John's right. The pulley dampener is the one I was thinking about and is the more expensive one. I forget how much the harmonic dampener was. Memory is quickly fading.
