did I break the crank???

I was driving my truck today and noticed a slight, steady vibration. I kind of turned my ear to it and listened. It all of a sudden started rattling so I pulled off the road. Still had oil pressure, temp good and would run just rattling badly. I looked under the hood and bumped it and it looked like the balancer was kind of bouncing. Did I wait too long to change the balancer?

That was a rhetorical question, right? Of course the balancer is toast, but the crank is not necessarily ready for the scrap heap itself.

If it were mine, I would drop the pan, open up all the rods and have a look, and also take off the middle three main caps. If the crank is gonna break, it will likely be in one of those locations. This gives you a chance to put in a new set of bearings.

Thanks for giving me some hope Dr. Lee. That's kind of what I had in mind to do, but it's good to hear it from someone more knowledgeable than I. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
