What is a high nickel content short block worth? I found one at a junkyard, but they want me to pull it and strip it and then pay them 500 for it. What is fair?

In 1999, I paid $550 for 1 1/2 CUCV engines, and it came with the big green crate.

In 1996, I paid $400 for my rebuildable '82 red block engine core. It was mostly complete, just missing a couple of injectors. It was already pulled. Looking back, I probably paid too much...could have found one cheaper, probably. That was before I discovered The Diesel Page.
A few years ago, I paid $500 for a complete '83 6.2L along with the 700R4 it was attached to, along with the NP208 transfer case that was behind that, along with the radiator and all the other assorted parts that went with the diesel (all pulled out for a gas conversion). I sold a lot of the extra parts and made my money back. I still have the engine core for spare parts.
Most recently I paid $50 for a complete '86 6.2L that had thrown a rod. The block, heads, and other assorted parts were good. I mostly wanted it for the heads, which now reside on my '82 turbo.
So, I'd say $500 is too high for a short block that you'd have to pull yourself, even though it is an '82 model. I think you can do better.
But it all depends on how bad you want it...it's your money! ;)
