Hi, Anyone replace there mechanical lift pump with an electric one? I am looking to use a universal carb type electric pump. Any success or problems? Thanks for the help,
Mike
I replaced mine when I pinched a fuel line to the old one while out wheeling. I put it between the primary and secondary filter and haven't had a problem at all. I used the E8012S listed in the members area article. When I did it I got rid of the fuel heater, which I'm contemplating putting back when I get chance, but even without it had no problems starting not plugged in and driving around at 15 degrees F.
Edit:
Woops, forgot to mention, mine said it was rated at 7 to 9 PSI if I remember correctly. A few months after I replaced it I noticed a fuel leak around my injection pump throttle shaft seals. I think it was there before I just hadn't been paying attention. Anyway, I replaced them with new ones from Accurate Diesel (gratis w/purchase of dual coil glow plugs) and has been completely dry since then.
Yes, around 4 - 7psi is good with a single filter.
Diesel fuel foams when warm - more pressure than that can cause inj pump timing and advance problems, as well as excessive foaming in the fuel tank(s).

Just did that transformation last month and have been very happy. I didn't want to ever change that nightmarish mechanical pump on the side of the road plus I thought it would further benefit my new IP. I mounted the electrical pump on the firewall between the primary and secondary filters. Definitly check out Dr. Lee's article.
