My 87 6.2 has some starting difficulties. For some reason the starter will not continue to turn over each time. It will turn over a few times then stop with the key still in start position. Give a couple more tries and it will continue cranking long enough to light it off. Very erratic, sometimes turns over once, maybe three or four times, then it will finally crank continuously until it starts.

Check the engine ground, the starter relay (if you have one), ignition switch, starter solenoid and the connection from the ign. sw. to the solenoid. Once you've ruled out the wiring and switches, get the starter checked out if necessary.
If there are strange grinding/barking sounds, check the starter ring to be sure it hasn't lost any teeth.
