View Full Version : Timing Chain done, it runs!

It runs! After tearing down and installing a new timing chain/gears, water pump, harmonic balancer, battery cables, and an assortment of belts and hoses, I turned the key and it started right away after the first glow plug cycle! But I have a couple of questions. smile.gif

There's a noise coming from right near the injection pump or the timing set. For lack of a better word, it's a buzzing (not electrical buzzing) or gear noise. Is this typical? Does it take a while for the timing set to break-in?

Timing. When I replaced the IP on my '93 6.5 I took it to the local diesel shop and asked them to time it. They said "just line up the marks and that's it". Is that good advise? I know it's been recommended here to have it professionally timed, but if the local guys don't seem to think it's important... It starts well, a little smoke from the right tailpipe, and once it was warmed up only a little diesel rattle at idle. I left the pump exactly where it was before I did the job, just a little to the driver's side of the line. Am I safe just to leave it?

Thanks again.

Just did the same on my 82, and had to advance the timing just a little bit to get things sounding and looking better. Then had to lower the idle setting.

Good luck trying to get it "professionally" timed. In my area, only the Stanadyne shop had the right tools, and they told me to go back to a mechanical pump. See my post Unable to set timing, which I started about a week and half ago.

catmandoo,

Diesel Specialties (in Omaha) is who I'm talking about, they're the ones that told me I didn't need to have my 93's timing checked by them, just line up the marks.

I thought it was odd, they actually were turning away business.

Can anyone tell me if a new timing chain set should make noise? It certainly sounds similar to gear noise. It's coming from dead center on the engine, right near the injection pump.

I'm not sure if the gears could be rubbing on something or on each other or if it's just a normal but different noise that I'm not used to. It's clearly audible when standing on the drivers side of the engine.

When I changed my timing chain it made a buzzing noise, just like a regular roller chain on a piece of equipment. It has gradually gone away with time...

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like it's probably just normal noise that I'm not used to.

By the way, since I replaced the harmonic balancer, the lower pulley and belts run dead true with no sign of the wobble that was visible on the old balancer. The old one didn't look especially bad except the rubber was oozing out slightly. It wasn't dried or cracked -- more like oil soaked from the leaking front seal!

Bob.
