I drive a 100 miles a day back and forth to work, with my 6.2 suburban it gets 20 MPG, thats not to bad but I was thinking of finding a older S-10 and install a 6.2 in it. I would think I could get 30 to 35 MPG with this combo, of course I would have to stiffen up the springs up front, but thats not to difficult :D

I tried to set one in a '85 2wd s-10 blazer. It had a 2.8 v-6/auto from factory with a/c and p/s. Major interference areas were the a/c air box and the steering shaft/gear box. If the truck had been a non-a/c and manual steering then it might have fit, or at least with a lot less work.
Wasn't worth my time to make it fit when I had a small block laying around to go in it. Sold the s-10, considered putting the 6.2 into a '82 Z-28, then quickly passed on that idea and dropped the motor into a crewcab.

Having seen your post about installing a 6.2/6.5
in an S-10, I'm reminded of the adage of enough monkies & typewriters( wordprocessors?) & you'll get a Gutenburg Bible. Well with humans, enough time & money & you'll get a mess.
There are a lot of reasons why you DO NOT want to put a 6.2/6.5 diesel in an S-10, weight & interference being amoung them. Some other reasons;
-The 700R4 that bolts up to a 2.8 is designed for a 60degree V-6. It is incompatable with a 90 degree V-8.(Not to mention that it has less clutch
packs.)
-The 4 & 5 speed transmissions that were available ,won't bolt up(again 60 degree pattern),
and, I,ll bet wouldn,t take the torque for very long.
Still not detered? Get a hold of the good folks at Advance Adaptors; www.advanceadapters.com (http://www.advanceadapters.com)
(Gotta learn how to set up those links). They haven't laughed at me yet, but they sure have talked me out of some hairbrained ideas.
Another idea, get a mid-late 80's C-10 barebones
step-side pickup with a 700R4 & swap motors.
Hope that helps.

I wasn't trying to use the original trans. I had a 700 out of the mentioned camaro. Just stating the original power train for frame style. If it was a later model 4.3 truck it may have had more room around the frame.
Another idea I thought about was a chevette diesel into a 4cyl Fiero. Install a small turbo with ~10psi boost and it should run pretty good.
I wonder how a VW turbodiesel would do in an S10 with fuel and boost increased? Probably the best way to go would be with a 4-cyl Cummins from a bread truck. They typically aren't high-powered so you wouldn't need to go crazy on driveline mods - a 1/2 ton V8 OD tranny would be strong enough, I'd think.

You can quite easily get over 250HP out of a 4BT Cummins.

Heh, heh,heh...madness. Which brings us fill circle back to the fact that GM offered an Isuzu four banger diesel (I've been told that it was a good engine)in the early S-10's. They ain't a Cummins, but they last a long time & there are a lot of em out there.

The 4BT's biggest disadvantage is heavy vibration at idle, unless it's the version with the counterbalance system.

What did cummins 4BT come in? where could I find one ,or what about that izusu diesel? what did that engine come in? I still dont no why a 6.2 would be a good choice, find a S-10 with a 4.3 shouldnt it bolt up to the trans? its the same bellhousing as a small bock chevy

It should bolt up to the 4.3 trans. However the 6.2 is much wider than a 4.3L.

I say put a benz turbo diesel in it, a company called 4x4 labs sells a kit to adapt a chevy automatic or NV-4500 to the benz 3.0L TD that puts out 120 HP and about 170 TQ. These engines feel much more powerful than that though because they rev up to 4500+ RPM's. an An S-10 should weigh less than some of the benz cars these came in. I can tell you my wife's old 87 190 2.5 turbo diesel is very quick. The tranny is bad in the car so I am looking to do something with it someday, I may put a tranny in it but was toying with the idea of putting the motor into something else. In the benz it's an easy 35+ MPG, I could get 40 if I didn't have a lead foot.
dieselhumvee,
I have a new (old stock) tranny for a 3.0L Benz that I'll let go cheap if it will work.
E-mail me at acbarta@yahoo.com if interested.
Thanks
If you want any easy install, get the hard to find GM 4.3 V-6 diesel. These were the 6 cylinder versions of the 5.7 diesel (2 cylinders removed) from the early 80's. Once the head bolt and gasket issues were addressed (DX engines) these were deceant engines. Not huge power, but will give you excellent fuel mileage. For a little more power try to find a GM 4.3 V-8 diesel. Very rare and almost unheard of, but again good mileage.

The 4.3L V8 olds diesel is rare indeed .......although i saw a new 4.3 for sale somewhere on the internet;can't exactly remember where i saw it.Had a photo of it too.Looked pretty good. The 4.3 V6 diesel is rare as well, but they can be found.Mostly found in cieras and X-body cars.
If you're looking for a good mileage commuter, why not put a 6.2/700R4 into an older Impala? I think it would be a much easier conversion and more comfortable to spend time in.
